This multi-ethnic film was the first Iranian film to make use of the northern dialect of Persian, Gilaki, in a serious context rather than comic relief. (Susan Taslimi playing the main character is Gilaki herself).
Bashu, the Little Stranger was voted the "Best Iranian Film of all time" in November 1999 by a Persian movie magazine "Picture world" poll of 150 Iranian critics and professionals.
Synopsis
The film is about a young boy from Khuzestan province, in the south of Iran, during the Iran–Iraq War. His parents are killed in a bombing raid on his home village and he escapes on a cargo truck to the north. Eventually he gets off and finds refuge on the farm of a Gilaki woman, Na'i, who has two young children of her own. Initially, Na'i tries to shoo Bashu away, but later takes pity on him and leaves food out for him. Although Na'i is initially ambivalent toward Bashu, and he is initially suspicious of her, they come to trust one another, and Bashu becomes a member of the family, even calling Na'i "mom". Being that Bashu speaks Arabic, while Na'i and her children speak Gilaki, they have trouble communicating with each other, although Bashu is able to speak and read Persian (for example in the scene where he picks up the school text book, reading a passage from it in an attempt to appease the children fighting). In a gesture of reciprocation and perhaps love, Bashu cares for Na'i when she falls ill, as she had done for him, crying for her and beating a drum in prayer.Actors

1944. En France, l'occupation allemande semble en passe de s'achever. Mais, même dans ce contexte, Michel Perrat n'a pas l'intention de jouer les héros. Après s'être quelque peu enrichi grâce à de petits trafics avec l'occupant, Michel est parti se réfugier chez sa grand-mère, dans le Vercors, pour attendre sagement la fin de la guerre. Mais le 21 juillet, les troupes allemandes prennent d'assaut le plateau du Vercors, actif foyer de résistance qu'ils entendent nettoyer. La grand-mère de Michel est tuée. Il prend la fuite, poursuivi par un soldat, qu'il parvient bientôt à éliminer. En fuite, Michel rencontre un groupe de maquisards. Tout en restant cyniquement clair sur sa position individualiste, il se joint à eux pour fuir le plateau. Commence alors une longue équipée, semée de multiples embuscades. À chaque tentative de sortie, le groupe perd des hommes. L'un d'eux, déguisé en paysan, est envoyé en éclaireur en ville. Mais il est pris, et dénonce ses amis. Pendant ce temps, ceux-ci ont trouvé refuge dans une ferme. Michel y couche avec la sœur du fermier, délaissant son poste de garde. Au matin, le groupe, surpris par l'arrivée des Allemands, est en grande partie décimé. Bientôt, ils ne seront plus que trois, et iront s'enliser dans un labyrinthe de pierres d'où, finalement, Michel sera le seul à ressortir vivant.

Starting in late May 1944, during the German retreat on the Eastern Front, Captain Stransky (Helmut Griem) orders Sergeant Steiner (Richard Burton) to blow up a railway tunnel to prevent Russian forces from using it. Steiner's platoon fails in its mission by coming up against a Russian tank. Steiner then takes a furlough to Paris just as the Allies launch their invasion of Normandy.
