Après que son père, Daniel Keith, est tué dans un accident d'automobile dans un ranch de l'Ouest, Dorothy Keith tombe amoureuse du jeune Joel Gant, un mineur, et l'épouse. Robert Clay, a noble America hero of humble means trying to do his best to help the war effort in the fictional capital Olancho in a small South American republic, but he meets a rich lady and they fall in love during the revolution. Robert Clay is the engineer and general manager of the Valencia Mining Company in Olancho. There are two sisters that come in to Robert Clay's life. Both are the daughters of Mr. Langham, the president of the Mining company. The older sister, Alice, is a New York society girl. Her sister Hope is enthusiastic, generous and sweet. Robert Clay meets Alice just before he sails for South America. He shares his admiration for her. Later, when he learns the family are going to Olancho also, he is very happy. But after getting to know Alice better he is sad. During her visit to Olancho a revolution starts, in this time she shows courage and to be a lady of charter. This attracts Clay to her, he ask her to marry him.

Rachel Stetherill (Edythe Chapman) disapproves of her daughter's choice for a husband, and therefore disowns her. After her daughter dies, Rachel refuses to help the child she has left behind. The boy is adopted by a safecracker, and soon excels at the profession. The boy grows up as Robert Ashe (Lytell), and becomes a safecracker renowned for his delicate hands and touch, hence the moniker "Ladyfingers". A lawyer, Justin Haddon (Frank Elliott), is trying to find Robert, who will will inherit his grandmother's estate if he is found. If he is not located, Rachel's ward, Enid Camden (Ora Carew), will inherit the estate, and it is Haddon's intention to marry Enid. But Robert meets Enid and falls in love with her. Haddon suspects that Robert is a thief and invites him to Rachel's home, expecting him to steal her string of pearls. The pearls disappear and the police suspect Ladyfingers, but the pearls are found and the case is dismissed. Rachel notices the resemblance between him and her son-in-law, and soon realizes that he is her grandson. When his past is revealed, Ladyfingers confesses his crimes and agrees to go to jail for two years to pay his debt to society. After his release from his prison term, he takes up farming and is happily married to Enid.

Since their college days, Desborough and Rittenshaw have pretended to live by the creed, "No God, no sin, no future life." To this Breck, an author, refuses to subscribe, though the three are intimate friends of long standing. A cloud on their relationship which rapidly assumes tragic proportions, is the intimacy between Desborough and the beautiful wife of Rittenshaw.
