In 1979, a truck driver Thomas (Luke Ford) arrives in Dampier, Western Australia, late one night. Upon entering the town pub he sees the silhouettes of a group of men, one of whom is holding a gun. Believing it is a murder, he rushes into the next room, where he sees that the men are trying to put down an apparently sick dog (Koko). Unable to bring themselves to carry out the euthanasia, the men, with Thomas, retreat to the bar.

In Eagles Nest, Western Australia, wealthy motel proprietor Jack Taylor believes his wife Alice to be having an affair. The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Ghalib falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Chaudvin; however, tragedy befalls their ill-fated relationship. Mirza Ghalib fails to make an impression at the Royal Court 'Mushaira' of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar but at the same time, unknowingly wins the heart of Chaudvin, an accomplished court dancer.

Spoiled playboy Bob Merrick's (Rock Hudson) reckless behavior causes him to lose control of his speed boat. Rescuers send for the nearest resuscitator, located in Dr. Phillips's house across the lake. While the resuscitator is being used to save Merrick, Dr. Phillips suffers a heart attack and dies. Georgia O'Keeffe (Joan Allen) is a young painter in the 1910s, while Alfred Stieglitz (Jeremy Irons) is New York-based photographer and art impresario, who discovers her works. Later, when O'Keeffe discovers that her works are displayed at an art gallery without her permission, she confronts Stieglitz. However, he manages to charm her, and starts their 20-year relationship. Stieglitz, 23 years senior to O'Keeffe, subsequently starts living with her and later divorces his wife to marry her. However, over the years, as O'Keeffe becomes a famous artist, their relationship deteriorates.
