I guappi (internationally released as Blood Brothers) is a 1974 Italian historical drama film with "poliziotteschi" and "noir" elements. This film marks the meeting between Claudia Cardinale and the director Pasquale Squitieri, who shortly thereafter would become her husband.

Synopsis

Naples, à la fin du XIXe siècle. Après un séjour en prison, le jeune Nicola Bellizzi s'installe dans un quartier misérable de la ville contrôlée par la Camorra. Son rêve est de changer complètement de vie pour devenir avocat. Il y rencontre le chef mafieux du quartier Don Gaetano, une brute proche de la mafia. Pour gagner de l'argent facilement, Nicola participe à un jeu de dés clandestin dans la rue sans savoir qu'il doit l'autorisation de Gaetano. Les deux hommes se battent sur la place publique mais, lorsque la police intervient pour arrêter leur bagarre, Nicola le défend. Pour le remercier, Gaetano lui propose de devenir son second dans la Camorra tout en continuant à étudier. Nicola accepte sa proposition et ils deviennent amis. Mais, peu à peu, Nicola est dégoûté par les méthodes employées de la mafia. Alors qu'il prend parti pour les pauvres, Nicola tente de rester l'ami de Gaetano. Les deux amis sont tous les deux amoureux de la femme, une certaine Lucia.

Carmine Crocco (Enrico Lo Verso) is an outlaw native of Rionero in Vulture (Basilicata), who was forced to the bandit's life after killing a man who had harassed his sister. He joined Giuseppe Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand against the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies hoping for a pardon, because the Savoy's government promised to forgive deserters in exchange for military service. Sicile, 1961. L'officier Bellodi, des Carabiniers doit mener une enquête sur le meurtre de Salvatore Colasberna, un chef d'entreprise de bâtiments assassiné pour avoir refusé de confier un chantier à une entreprise protégée par la mafia. Le meurtre s'est produit près de l'habitation de Rosa Nicolosi, de son mari et de leur petite fille. Le capitaine Bellodi parvient à arracher à Rosa l'aveu que son mari lui a confié avoir vu le long de la route, le jour du crime, un certain « Zecchinetta », nom qui est confirmé par un informateur de la police, « Parrinieddu ». Entre-temps, le boss (chef, capo en italien) local de la mafia, Don Mariano Arena, cherche à déguiser le meurtre de Colasberna en crime passionnel et fait remonter les pistes vers Nicolosi : il a tué le chef d'entreprise en tant qu'amant de sa femme. Le capitaine ne croit pas à cette version et cherche le corps de Nicolosi, dont il pense qu'il a été tué comme témoin gênant ; de corps, il ne trouvera que celui de « Parrinieddu », tué parce que compromis. L'enquête aboutit à l'arrestation de Don Mariano mais, grâce à ses accointances politiques, il est libéré et Bellodi est transféré.

Luca Di Angelo (Fabio Testi) is a smuggler, one member of an organized team trafficking cigarettes and booze up and down the coast off Naples, Italy. After a run-in with the police in which the smugglers manage to get away by faking a boat explosion resulting in the police motorboats responding to the false emergency allowing the smugglers to get away, Luca and his brother Mickey suspect Scherino (Ferdinand Murolo), the head of a rival gang of smugglers, of passing on their actives. Lucia and Mickey take their accusations to their boss Perlante (Saverio Marconi) a sleazy playboy withy numerous Mafia connections, who agrees to look into it. After a nighttime fire at Mickey's racing stables kills a valued racehorse, he and Luca drive over to inspect the damage. But on the way, they are stopped at a fake police roadblock where the assassins dressed as policemen trick Mickey into getting out of the car and machine-gun him to death over and over again (a homage to Sonny Corelone's death scene in The Godfather), while Luca barely escapes injury by hiding on the floor of the car.
