Synopsis

Les faits se passent en 1604, en Russie et relatent les événements de la guerre contre les Polono-Lituaniens, qui soutiennent Otrepiev comme étant le tsarévitch Dimitri, pendant le règne de Boris Godounov (1551-1605).

En juillet 1942, lors de la seconde bataille de Kharkov les défenses soviétiques sont submergées par la contre-attaque allemande. Accompagnées de réfugiés civils, les troupes reculent vers Stalingrad. Parmi les combattants se trouvent le lieutenant Youri Kierżencew, son radiotéléphoniste Anton Valega et Ivan Sedykh, un éclaireur. Pour quelques jours, ils sont hébergés dans la maison d'un ouvrier d'usine des tracteurs de Stalingrad dont la nièce prénommée Lucia travaille dans un hôpital militaire. En compagnie de la jeune femme, le lieutenant Kierżencew fait une promenade le long de la Volga, ils passent près du kourgane Mamaïev. Lucia voit Kierżencew comme quelqu'un de renfermé, peu causant et pragmatique. Lui même avoue que ses centres d’intérêt se sont réduits aux éléments d'organisation militaire tellement que, même en regardant la Lune, il la considère strictement du point de vue stratégique.

Andrei Bolkonsky In St. Petersburg of 1805, Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a rich nobleman, is introduced to high society. His friend, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, joins the Imperial Russian Army as aide-de-camp of General Mikhail Kutuzov in the War of the Third Coalition against Napoleon. As Pierre's father recognizes him, he attracts the attention of Hélène Kuragin and marries her, only to discover she is unfaithful to him. Bolkonsky takes part in the failed campaign in Austria, where he witnesses the Battle of Schöngrabern and the Battle of Austerlitz. The prince is badly wounded and is mistaken for dead. His wife dies at childbirth. Bolkonsky returns to his home and meets Natasha Rostova, the young daughter of a count.

Épuisés par une marche de trente kilomètres faite dans la matinée, la troupe arrive dans un petit village situé sur la rive droite du Don. Elle s'y arrête et les soldats en profitent pour se refaire, boire, manger, fumer, discuter, se confier, dormir, se baigner, réparer du matériel, aller à la pêche aux écrevisses,... et pour Pétia c'est aussi découvrir la gent féminine locale et au passage encaisser les critiques très sévères d'une vieille paysanne qui les prend pour de lâches fuyards.

Serebryakov, a retired professor and his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yeléna, visit their country estate, which funds their urban lifestyle. Vanya, brother of the Professor's first wife, who manages the farm estate, and the local Doctor Astrov, both fall under Yelena's spell, while complaining of the endless ennui of their provincial existence. Astrov is an experienced physician who performs his job conscientiously, but has lost all idealism and spends much of his time drinking. Sofya, the Professor's daughter by his first wife, who works to keep the estate going with her uncle Vanya, meanwhile suffers from lack of esteem over what she sees as her own lack of beauty, and from an unrequited love for Dr. Astrov. Matters are brought to a head when the Professor announces his intention to sell the estate, Vanya and Sofya's home, to achieve a higher income for himself and his wife.

The film begins in the Soviet Union in spring of 1946, as truck driver Andrei Sokolov (Bondarchuk) and his young son travel along a road in the country and run into a man Sokolov recognizes as a fellow military driver. Sokolov begins to tell the story of his experiences upon returning from the Russian Civil War and the famine of 1922. A flashback reveals Andrei building a house in Kuban, where he meets and falls in love with his future wife Irina. Soon the pair are married and have a son, Anatoly (nicknamed Tolyushka), and two daughters. Andrei leads a happy family life for 17 years, until the Second World War.
