Synopsis
Au Klondike, cinq mineurs exploitent fructueusement un filon de métal précieux. Dennine, découvreur du filon, tue deux de ses camarades qui le traitaient comme un serviteur. Les deux autres mineurs, Edith et son mari, n'ont pas eu le temps de maîtriser Dennine. À cause du dégel, ils ne peuvent le livrer à la police et décident de le juger eux-mêmes. La sentence tombe, Dennine est condamné à mort. Ses deux justiciers le pendent, mais, la corde casse...Actors

Dans un pays étranger capitaliste, les ouvriers d’une usine mènent une révolte qui est réprimée par le patronat, assisté d'une organisation fasciste. Tomas Lann, le dirigeant de la révolte ouvrière, réussi à fuir vers l’Union soviétique où il fait connaissance de l'ingénieur soviétique Podobed, l'inventeur du rayon de la mort, un appareil produisant un rayon énergétique puissant (de type laser), qui peut être utilisé comme une arme. Mais les espions étrangers capitalistes enlèvent l’appareil pour l'utiliser comme arme contre les ouvriers révoltés. Après plusieurs poursuites, bagarres et luttes, Tomas Lann réussi à reprendre l’appareil et à le transporter dans son pays. Là, les ouvriers révoltés, armés maintenant du rayon de la mort, peuvent gagner leur lutte contre les capitalistes.

The film is a broad satire of American ignorance of the Soviet Union. The naive American, Mr. West, played by Porfori Podobed as a Harold Lloyd type (complete with enormous round glasses), is a YMCA president who is planning a trip to the newly founded Soviet Union to spread the idea of the YMCA. His wife, Madge, is worried that Russia is full of savage Bolsheviks who wear primitive rags and fur for clothing, as depicted in American magazines. He takes along his cowboy friend Jeddie played by Boris Barnet for protection and as a companion.

Bill Porter, alias O’Henry, incarcéré pour détournement de fonds, observe ses compagnons de prison : il commence là sa carrière d’écrivain. Dulcie, vendeuse de province, se console de la platitude de son existence en lisant des « contes roses ». Elle est transportée par les récits du « grand Consolateur » et elle rêve du prince charmant. O’Henry raconte, dans un de ses récits, l’histoire du casseur de coffres-forts Jimmy Valentine. Stranded by a storm in the Caspian Sea, sailor Yussuf and mechanic Alyosha cling to the remains of their ship for survival. On their third day adrift, the castaways are rescued by fishermen. Taken to a nearby island off the coast of Soviet Azerbaijan, Yussuf and Alyosha are welcomed into the local Lights of Communism collective farm. The two men are quickly smitten by a local woman named Mariya. As Alyosha explores the island, he separates from his friend, and happens across Mariya alone. Introducing themselves, each is in for a surprise. Mariya is, in fact, a leader of the collective. She is delighted to learn of Alyosha's profession, as all of the island's mechanics have left in service to the Pacific Fleet. In their absence, Mariya had feared that the collective's fishing operations would have been impeded. Alyosha promises to stay for the entire season, and going off to inspect a motor boat together, the two engage in flirtatious behavior. However, Yussuf soon joins up with the pair and grows jealous.

To prepare grounds for yet another speculation, the banker Ornano (Mikhail Klimov) sells his house for three million rubles, but since it the weekend he cannot deposit the money in a bank and must carry it with him. He leaves the city for his country home for a short period of time, only return right away owing to his worries about the money. His wife sends a note to her lover telling him that there are three million in the house but the note, owing to the machinations of one of the three thieves on whom the film focuses, is intercepted. The note, falling into hands of the thief/adventurer Cascarilla (Anatoli Ktorov) causes him to plot his attempt to steal the money. Meantime, the small-time burglar Tapioca (Igor Ilyinsky) also chooses the same night to break into the house.

The story centers on the relationship of the three main characters. Liuda and her husband, Kolia, live in a one-room basement apartment on Third Meschchanskaya Street, a petty-bourgeois neighborhood in Moscow. She is bored and resentful with the constant succession of household duties and the cramped living conditions in which she must cook and attempt to organize her clothes, even though there is no place to put them. She spends her days idly, mostly by reading magazines, notably the popular (at that time) Soviet film fan magazine Soviet Screen (Sovetskii ekran). Kolia works as a stonemason and is charming and good-natured, but also dictatorial and egocentric. When Kolia’s old friend, Volodia, arrives in Moscow, he cannot find a place to live in the overcrowded city, due to a severe housing shortage which was still a major social problem ten years after the revolution. Kolia invites him to stay at their apartment, to sleep on the sofa.
