Based on the novel L'Homme de chevet by Eric Holder, with a screenplay by Alain Monne and Nathalie Vailloud, the film is about a beautiful, free-spirited woman who becomes bedridden following a terrible accident. Against her better judgement, she hires a drunk middle-aged former boxer to cook and care for her. Although unqualified for the position, he is desperate to work, and slowly he wins the trust of the woman, who teaches him how to read. Through his help, she is forced to consider the potential happiness that awaits her in the outside world. Cartagena was filmed on location in Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia.
The actor Christopher Lambert was six months in Cartagena training with coach Anibal Gonzalez during his preparation for the role.
Synopsis
En Colombie, Léo (Christophe Lambert) est un ancien champion de boxe qui entre au service de Muriel (Sophie Marceau), comme garde-malade. Muriel, riche française, tétraplégique à la suite d'un accident de voiture, clouée au lit, est assistée de Lucia qui est amoureuse de sa patronne. Léo, alcoolique, n'a pas vraiment laissé tomber la boxe : dans le gymnase de Valdès, ils décident d'entraîner deux jeunes femmes, Lina et Miranda et parient 5 000 $ sur l'avenir sportif de leurs deux recrues. Léo s'occupe de Lina, prostituée sans réelle attache, et Valdès, de Miranda. Petit à petit, des sentiments naissent entre Muriel et Léo et entre Lina et Léo.Actors

In 1951 in the midst of the Second Red Scare, Peter Appleton is an up-and-coming young screenwriter in Hollywood. In Berkeley, California in 1988, Mark O'Brien is a poet who is forced to live in an iron lung due to complications from polio. Due to his condition, he has never had sex. After unsuccessfully proposing to his caretaker Amanda, and sensing he may be near death, he decides he wants to lose his virginity. Norbit Albert Rice (Eddie Murphy) and Kate Thomas (Thandie Newton) are best friends as children at a combination Chinese restaurant and orphanage owned by their father figure, Mr. Wong (Eddie Murphy), but are separated when Kate gets adopted. While being bullied by twins on a playground one day, Norbit is saved by a tough, overweight girl named Rasputia Latimore (Eddie Murphy) who scares him into being her boyfriend. Though at first she genuinely likes Norbit and cares about him, going as far as intimidating other kids into letting Norbit play with them – Rasputia's kindness deteriorates as she grows up to be an ignorant, arrogant, vindictive, and mean-spirited woman. She eventually pressures Norbit into marrying her, and bullies, insults, and controls him to make sure that she keeps him all to herself. Norbit is also belittled by Rasputia's older brothers, Big Black Jack (Terry Crews), Blue (Lester 'Rasta' Speight), and Earl (Clifton Powell), working as a bookkeeper at their local construction company. The Latimore brothers also run a "security business" and instill fear in everyone in the town except Mr. Wong, who refuses to sell his establishment to them.
