Chattakkari is a 1974 Malayalam-language Indian feature film directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan and produced by M. O. Joseph, starring Lakshmi, Mohan Sharma, Adoor Bhasi and Sukumari in lead roles. The film written by Thoppil Bhasi based on Pamman's famous novel of the same name.

It was the first Malayalam film of Lakshmi and also the start of her romance with co-star Mohan Sharma. It won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for Lakshmi, Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Adoor Bhasi who played Laxmi's alcoholic father, and the Filmfare Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. Storywriter Pamman received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story. It has the distinction of being the first Malayalam film to run continuously for 40 weeks in a Bangalore theatre. All Songs composed by well known music director G. Devarajan were instant hits.

In 2012, it is remade in the same name directed by Santosh Sethumadhavan and produced by Suresh Kumar under the banner of Revathy Kalamandir and stars Shamna Kasim in the title roles.

Synopsis

Chattakkari is the love story of an Anglo-Indian girl (Lakshmi) and a Hindu boy (Mohan Sharma) who consummate the relationship. She has a child out-of-wedlock in secret.

The story is about a college lecturer Srinivasan (Sathyan) who is doing research on the Yakshis. He is disfigured in an accident in his college lab, while experimenting with acids. Everyone who used to adore him begins to hate him and keep away from him for his looks. He meets a beautiful woman Ragini (Sharada). She is willing to accept him despite his disfigurement. This film depicts the restrictive social conventions regarding inter-caste marriage and unwed motherhood in India. Julie (Laxmi) is a Christian Anglo-Indian girl with a loving, but alcoholic, father (Om Prakash), a dominating mother (Nadira), a younger brother and sister (Sridevi). She falls in love with her best friend's (Rita Bhaduri) brother Shashi Bhattacharya (Vikram Makandar), a Hindu boy. The lovers consummate their relationship, which leaves her pregnant. Shashi goes away to college, not knowing about her pregnancy. Her mother is distraught when Julie tells her about the pregnancy. They don't tell the rest of the family. Her mother thinks about getting Julie an abortion, but a devout Christian (Sulochana) talks her out of it. Julie is sent away to have her baby in secret. The rest of the family is told that Julie got a job. After the baby's birth, Julie's mother arranges for the child to be left in an orphanage, and demands that Julie return home and forget about the baby.
