Synopsis
Chithambaram(S.Ve.Shekar),a good hearted simpleton from a rich family based in karaikudi is in love with his cousin Uma(Ilavarasi).Uma is a well educated girl and in love with Arun(Arun Pandian), her collegemate. when chithambaram's parents speak to uma's parents about their(chithambaram and uma) marriage,uma's mother insults chithambaram for his stupidity.so,chithambaram sets to find a job and earn money so that he can ask uma's hand for marriage with respect.But what ensues is a series of unexpected twists and turns for chithambaram as he is wrongly accused of smuggling,burglary and murder of a young woman all done in the same night of his first job offer by a wealthy and respectable man.And the impossibility of him having committed all three crimes gives him the benefit of doubt by the police who seeks the assistance of beemarao(visu),a CID inspector.Beemarao is threatened by goons on his arrival to karaikudi(the story is set in karaikudi and nearby localities) and he has his first doubt of someone else's hand in the crimes.he ventures upon finding the real criminals behind the mishappenings along with arun through clever deduction and effort. In the end what turns out to be another surprise is the identity of criminal himself.Actors

The film opens into the life of Ammaiyappan Mudaliar (Visu), an ordinary middle-class man who makes a simple living as a Central Government clerk. His family, a typical South Indian joint family, includes his dutiful wife Godavari, his oldest son Chidambaram (Raghuvaran), a junior officer at Indian Oil, and his wife Uma (Lakshmi), his second son Siva (Chandrasekhar), a factory worker, his youngest son Bharathi (a never do good fellow who has failed his high school exams twice) and his daughter Sarojini (Ilavarasi). The modest income from his government job barely provides for his family's needs. His sons contribute some amounts in proportion to their incomes. The family gets by, but Ammaiyappan worries for the future. Siva and Sarojini are not yet married, and Bharathi has a bleak future if he does not graduate high school. Sarojini is a particular worry; her beauty and charm are matched by her arrogance and contempt. She summarily rejects any marriage proposal, and her obstinate demeanor causes great concern to Ammaiyappan. Ammaiyappan nonetheless plows on through life hoping for solutions to his difficulties.

Anjalai, a village woman gets married to a drunkard Manickam, with a hope of changing his behavior post marriage. But Manickam continues drinking and goes to a level where he steals Anjalai's jewels before losing his job. During this time, his mother dies in a fire accident after which he vows not to drink anymore. Meanwhile, Manickam falls sick after damaging his liver as a result of excessive drinking. In order to safeguard his life, Anjalai collects money by begging in the streets and donation from the chief minister of the state. Manickam is sent to the United States for treatment. When the couple return to India after Manickam gets cured, he starts drinking again and gets addicted to it. Unable to tolerate his change in behaviour, Anjalai ends her life. This forces all the women in the village join together to protest against alcohol.
