The film was also submitted as Iceland's official entry to the Academy Awards foreign film section. The film is set in the Breiðholt suburb of the Icelandic capital, and portrays a grittiness which is in "stark contrast to the tourist-friendly portrayal of Reykjavík.

Synopsis
The plot centers around single nurse Karaitas (Nína Dögg Fillipusdóttir), her son, Guðumund (Andri Snær Helgason), who only plays with schizophrenic family friend, Marino (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), and criminal father Garðar (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) and his conflicts which lead to the near death beating of twin brother Georg.Actors

In the summer of 1983, a twelve-year-old girl, Hera Karlsdottir, lives a normal life on her family farm in a close-knit community. This changes once she watches her older brother Baldur fall off a tractor before his long hair is scalped by its blades. He is rushed out by the family by truck for medical attention, but he dies of his injury. At his funeral, Hera glares at the portrait of Jesus on the wall and runs out of the church during the service. Returning home, she picks up her brother's guitar and immediately adopts his metal music and fashion, burning all of her old clothes.

En 1900, trois marins, James, Donald et Thomas, débarquent sur une île inhabitée au nord de l’Écosse afin de garder le phare. Jusqu'au moment où ils découvrent une barque échouée sur la rive. Ils y découvrent un homme inconscient et un mystérieux coffre scellé. Après que l'un d'entre eux assassine l'inconnu qui s'apprêtait à le tuer, ils s'aperçoivent qu'il transportait de l'or. Alors que James et Donald souhaitent s'en emparer, Thomas pense qu'ils doivent attendre un moment avant de se partager la marchandise.
