Chimera is a British horror/science-fiction television miniseries made by Anglia Television for ITV in 1991. It is based on the 1982 novel of the same name about genetic engineering by Stephen Gallagher. The theme music was "Cursum Perficio" by Enya.

The series was later re-edited for release in the United States, and retitled Monkey Boy.

Synopsis

The story focuses upon Chad, a young half-boy, half-chimp, developed by scientists as part of a top secret government operation. However, Chad becomes aggressive, strong and uncontrollable, with the inability to communicate on a human level, escaping from the lab, brutally killing several nurses and scientists in the process. The hunt is on to find and capture Chad before the public encounters this strange and dangerous creation. During Chad's escape, he wrestles with his natural child tendencies after befriending some local children and trying to control his wild primal inner instincts.

The film opens with Drake's return from his voyage of circumnavigation. He is nervous about how he will be received at home, and rightly so, for he has executed Thomas Doughty, an influential courtier, investor in the voyage, and formerly, his closest friend. The story is mostly told in flashback as Drake recounts the circumstances of the voyage to Queen Elizabeth I. Although it is clear how Drake interprets the events that led to Doughty's execution, the depicted scenes paint a more ambiguous tale. Conflict between Drake and Doughty grows due to an escalating pattern of Drake's increasing autocracy and paranoia, and Doughty's underhanded means to regain the authority he sees as rightly his due.

Dan Reilly, a farmer working in rural Ireland, is propositioned by a local bio-genetics firm to assist in some experiments to make faster growing cattle. The experiments go awry and one of Dan's cows births a calf that is already pregnant with six malformed fetuses with fangs and exoskeletons. Orla, a local veterinarian, kills the calf and unwittingly allows one of the still living fetuses to escape during a necropsy. John, the scientist conducting the experiment, discovers that the cells of the fetuses are replicating far too quickly and that the missing fetal creature has the potential to infect cows as well as humans globally, causing a massive infestation of the bloodthirsty creatures.
