Set in 1936 China, Ruth Harkness has come to settle the affairs of her husband, Bill, who died while observing the rare and unstudied panda bear. His journal describes the panda as shy and docile, while great white hunter Dak Johnson describes them as ferocious beasts. This intrigues her, and she sets off to retrace Bill's steps and save the pandas from Johnson. She encounters many obstacles, both natural and created by Johnson.

Anthropological professor Conrad Hamilton attempts to study a new species of primate, possibly the missing link between humanity and the great ape, found in a hidden valley deep within the jungles of Thailand. Hamilton's initial research team tries to capture one of these new (and very large) primates, but fail and are all killed. Short Eyes is set in an unnamed prison in New York City, whose inmates are predominantly black or Puerto Rican. Dominick "Nicky" (Hulce) and Eugene "Gino" (Liotta) Luciano are twin brothers living together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A stevedore in Thessaloniki, Greece, Salamo Arouch's passion is boxing.
