Add to a movie listDarling of the Gods (German: Liebling der Götter) is a 1930 German musical drama film directed by Hanns Schwarz and starring Emil Jannings, Renate Müller and Olga Tschechowa. Jannings had recently returned from Hollywood where the arrival of sound films had harmed his career. The film was made at the Babelsburg studios, and based on the play Die Tokaier by Hans Müller. It was made by Erich Pommer's production unit, part of the German Major film studio UFA. It premiered at the Gloria-Palast in Berlin on 13 October 1930.
Synopsis
A selfish opera singer leaves his wife and home in Germany to travel the world's great cities. Eventually he is drawn back to his Bavarian homeland.Actors

Le jeune Martin Hinterkirchner a quitté le village de Himmelsberg pour se rendre à Vienne, où il a obtenu un emploi de répétiteur à l'opéra. C'est une désillusion : le travail n'est qu'un poste d'assistant. Martin doit donc vivre chez l'ancienne chanteuse d’opéra Cäsarina Zwanziger et être son pianiste. Il écrit secrètement, soutenu par le fils de Cäsarina Peter, du schlager qu'il soumet au manager de musique Cobold. Surtout pour la chanson La Serenata qu'il a écrite pour la star schlager Linda Borg, mais elle est d'abord présentée à la manager de Linda, Isolde Fürchtenich, tombe dans la main, qui n'en veut pas. Martin est déçu et pense que Linda est maintenant une personne arrogante. Le grand-père de Martin, Leopold, qui arrive à l'exposition canine à Vienne avec son teckel Seppl, est impressionné par Linda. Quand le jury exclut Seppl au premier tour à cause de son pedigree manquant, c'est Linda qui fait l'éloge du "chien de race".

The young Count Georg Wolkersheim (Willy Fritsch) is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie (Maria Holst), and their two chamberlains (Hans Moser and Theo Lingen), and when the four of them attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (Fred Liewehr). Georg quits the ball and returns to his lodgings to wait for his wife. Meanwhile, the two servants plot to further inflame Georg's jealousy by posing as Ludwig to commission a portrait of Melanie from the famous artist Moritz Daffinger (Egon von Jordan). The next day, however, Georg and Daffinger expose the servants' ruse, Ludwig reveals to Melanie that he has discovered her true identity, and all is forgiven.

Le jeune compositeur Franz Schubert doit mettre sa guitare en gage pour payer son loyer. The film is set in Viennese high society of about 1900. After a masked carnival ball, Gerda Harrandt (Hilde von Stolz), wife of the surgeon Carl Ludwig Harrandt (Peter Petersen), allows the fashionable artist Ferdinand von Heidenick (Adolf Wohlbrück) to paint a portrait of her wearing only a mask and a muff. This muff however belongs to Anita Keller (Olga Tschechowa), in secret the painter's lover but also the fiancée of the court orchestra director Paul Harrandt (Walter Janssen), the brother of Gerda's husband.

Immanuel Rath (Emil Jannings) is an esteemed educator at the local Gymnasium – a college preparatory high school – in Weimar Germany.
