Synopsis

During a zombie apocalypse, Malcolm Grant, a CIA agent, allows himself to be experimented on by a government lab run by General Morton. Morton believes the only way to stop the apocalypse is by wiping Grant's memories and injecting Grant with the experiences of Quint Barrow, the index case of the zombie plague. In New York City a hospital worker is found to have been devouring bodies in the morgue. The story begins with a military truck transporting barrels of Trioxin. The soldier, driving the vehicle through a downpour, is unaware when a barrel breaks loose and falls into a river. The next morning, a young boy, Jesse Wilson, is at the cemetery with 2 local bullies. The trio investigate the Trioxin tank that they find, and Jesse warns them that they should not tamper with it. The bullies trap Jesse in a derelict mausoleum and leave him. They then return to the trioxin tank and manage to release the toxic gas. A van pulls up to the graveyard, introducing the characters Ed, Joey, and Brenda. Ed explains to Joey that they are there to rob graves; Brenda expresses her fears for cemeteries, but Joey assures her that it will be worth their time and leaves Brenda in the van. He heads into the cemetery with Ed. They decide to loot the mausoleum and open the locked doors, releasing Jesse, who immediately runs home. At his home, Jesse watches his older sister, Lucy, doing aerobic exercises to a work-out video; she tells Jesse to do his homework or he will be grounded.

Michael, who has recently broken up with Gabi, visits her Berlin apartment to return her keys and hopefully save the relationship. He finds two plumbers there, and they do not know where she is. As Michael attempts to contact Gabi, a rage virus transforms people into bloodthirsty cannibals, and one of the plumbers attacks Michael. As Berlin falls into anarchy, Michael and the remaining workman, Harper, barricade themselves in the apartment complex and brace for an attack. They soon realize that the rage virus can be temporarily subdued by remaining calm or using sedatives. They also learn that the infected are photosensitive. The pair uses this weakness to attempt to make contact with the other inhabitants of the apartment complex. Michael, Harper, and Anita, a resident, attempt to break out of the apartment building and make their way to Gabi, whom Michael believes is in danger.
