The Day of the Siege: September Eleven 1683 (Italian: 11 Settembre 1683, Polish title: Bitwa pod Wiedniem, literally: "The Battle of Vienna") is a 2012 English-language Polish and Italian historical drama film based on the 1683 Battle of Vienna and directed by Renzo Martinelli. The film was released on October 12, 2012.

Synopsis

Beginning after the First Siege of Vienna the century before, the film brings viewers through the various conflicts between European Christianity and Turkish Islam which led up to the events of September 11, 1683 and the Battle of Vienna. It shows the alleged circumstances of the 2nd siege of Vienna and the assault of Ottoman Turks led by Kara Mustafa (Enrico Lo Verso) against the Habsburg monarchy. The assault was stopped by King Jan III Sobieski (Jerzy Skolimowski), and curtailed Turkish expansion into European Christendom.

Italie, XII siècle. Frédéric Barberousse (Rutger Hauer) rêve de créer un empire universel, en établissant son contrôle politique sur les villes italiennes du Nord et sur le Royaume de Sicile. Plusieurs fois l'empereur descend en Italie pour rétablir sa suprématie contre les visées autonomistes des communes. À une occasion, l'empereur allemand est sauvé par un jeune garçon, fils d'un forgeron milanais, Alberto. Mais Barberousse en vient aux exactions, il envoie l'armée impériale dans des expéditions punitives contre un grand nombre de villes alliées de Milan, assiège enfin cette dernière et, le 10 mars 1162, l'envahit avec ses troupes et la rase jusqu'au sol. Au cours de la bataille périssent les deux frères d'Alberto, dont l'un, Otto, est tué par Alberto lui-même dans une tentative tragique de défendre les murs de Milan.

Le jour de son départ à la retraite, le magistrat italien Rosario Saracini reçoit d'un inconnu un film en super 8. Il y découvre les images de l'enlèvement par les Brigades rouges, le 16 mars 1978, de l'ancien Président du Conseil Aldo Moro, qui fut ensuite séquestré puis assassiné. L'agrandissement d'une image de la pellicule lui permet d'y reconnaître un colonel du SISMI, les services secrets militaires italiens. Vendredi 27 juin 1980, le DC-9-15 I-TIGI de la compagnie aérienne italienne Itavia explose en vol près de l'île d'Ustica et sombre à 3 700 m de profondeur dans la mer Tyrrhénienne sans laisser de survivants. Pan Tadeusz is told in flashbacks as the author, Adam Mickiewicz, reads his work to a group of elderly exiles in Paris. The story takes place over the course of five days in 1811 and one day in 1812 in rolling landscapes of Lithuania inhabited by Poles whose homeland has been recently partitioned among Russia, the Austrian Empire and Prussia. Not far off in history looms Napoleon's invasion of Russia, the prospect of which heartens Poles yearning for liberation. But more immediately, the characters in Pan Tadeusz are feuding among themselves.
