Chopra it was directed by BR's brother Yash Chopra, this being Yash's first movie as a director, having been an assistant director in BR's earlier film Naya Daur. The film stars Mala Sinha, Rajendra Kumar, Nanda, Leela Chitnis, Jeevan and Ashok Kumar. Steeped in Nehruvian secularism, the story revolves around a Muslim bringing up an `illegitimate' Hindu child and featured classic song, Too Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega, Insaan Ki Aulaad Hai, Insaan Banega on Manmohan Krishna, who also won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Abdul Rasheed. Besides that Mala Sinha received a nomination for Best Actress and Mukhram Sharma for Best Story.
In the next film, Dharmputra (1961) about Hindu fundamentalism, Chopra reverse the theme, as therein a Hindu family brings an illegitimate Muslim child.

The film opens in 1925, during the British rule in India & at the height of Indian independence movement is the tale of two Delhi families, that of Nawab Badruddin and Gulshan Rai. The two families are so close that they virtually share the same house. The Nawab's daughter, Husn Bano, has an affair with a young man named javed & gets pregnant. When the Nawab attempts to arrange her marriage with javed, he finds that javed has disappeared. Amrit Rai and his wife Savitri assist Husn with the birth of a baby boy, Dilip, and even adopt him and give him their family name. Young Dilip is the apple of the Badruddin and the Rai households. Husn then gets married to another young man, Javed and moves to another location. In the meantime, while participating in a protest to force the British to leave India the Nawab is killed. Years later, Husn Bano and Javed return to a warm welcome by the Rai family. Then she meets Dilip - not the Dilip she had left behind - this Dilip is fascist, a Muslim-hater, who has joined forces with other extremists, in order to force Muslims to leave India and even go to the extent of burning buildings and killing them.

Dilip Roy (Rajesh Khanna) was a painter and married to a rich woman, Sushma . One day while he was passionately painting, his wife comes and asks him to come out with her. Kiran (Juhi Chawla) is a college student who is on her way home for Holi break one year when she hears a man serenading her across the campus in Simla. Her heart swells as she assumes that her boyfriend, Sunil (Sunny Deol), has come to meet her and escort her home. Unfortunately, it isn't Sunil, but Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), a classmate with a crush on her. Balraj (Dharmendra), affectionately called Raj, by his elder brother (Nana Palsikar) and sister Vija (Madhumati), is a student in college in the arts semester. As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Sulochana Chatterjee), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied. Both fall in love. Mr. and Mrs. Rai are thrilled, when they come to know that Raj and Shanti are in love, and excitedly plan their marriage. As Raj's brother is critically ill, Raj has to return to his village. After several days when Raj returns to the Rai family, he refuses to marry Shanti on the ground that he is going to marry Gauri (Nimmi), the blind sister of Pran whom his sister loves. The Rai family is devastated. And then they find out that then Raj has been arrested for killing someone.

Samar Anand (Shahrukh Khan), a major in the Indian Army, defuses a bomb in Ladakh without fear or regard for his safety. Lala Kedarnath Prasanta (Balraj Sahni) has three sons whose birthdays are on the same day. On the occasion of their birthday celebration, they are visited by a well-known astrologer, who advises Lala Kedarnath not to be proud for his past achievements and to not be too optimistic about the future as fate (kismat) plays a key role in life. A young man, Sunil Kohli (Rajesh Khanna), falls for beautiful Sonia (Sharmila Tagore). Soon, they get married and leave for their honeymoon. On the way, owing to bad weather, they decide to spend a night at a bungalow owned by Sunil's boss. The boss's son, Dheeraj Kapoor (Prem Chopra), tries to rape Sonia when she is alone. But Sunil arrives in time, and a fight ensues, resulting in the death of Dheeraj. Sunil is arrested and, later, sentenced to death by the court. But, on the way to prison, the police van carrying him meets with an accident. All occupants are killed. Years later, Sonia, working as a school teacher and bringing up Sunil's and her son, finds out that her husband is still alive. He is living with a new identity as Sudhir, and is married to a rich woman named Chandni (Raakhee). After escaping from the police van, Sunil met Chandni, whose lover had ditched her on learning of her pregnancy. Sunil married her to provide legitimacy to her child, in return for her help in establishing his new identity. Now, after so many years, the law is once again at his door step. This time, however, there is an added crime to his name: bigamy.
