Dreaming Lips (German:Der träumende Mund) is a 1932 French-German drama film directed by Paul Czinner and starring Elisabeth Bergner, Rudolf Forster and Anton Edthofer. The film is based on the play Mélo by Henri Bernstein. As was common at the time, the film was a co-production with a separate French-language version Mélo made.

After Bergner and Czinner went into exile in Britain following the Nazi takeover, they remade the film in 1937. A further German remake was released in 1953, starring Maria Schell.

Synopsis

Peter, musicien d'orchestre, s'inquiète assez pour sa jeune femme, Gaby. Quand elle rencontre l'ami de Pierre, Michael, elle tombe amoureuse du virtuose du violon, mais à partir de là elle vit avec conscience. D'une part, elle ne croit pas à la continuité du mariage avec Peter, d'autre part, elle ne veut pas sortir d'une vie conjugale sûre. Quand Peter tombe gravement malade, elle se tourne vers son mari. Mais l'amour pour Michael est plus fort. Désespérée et sans foi dans une façon de sortir de son sentiment gênant, elle met fin à ses jours.

Duke Frederick (Felix Aylmer) has usurped and deposed his older brother, Duke Senior (Henry Ainley). Frederick allows the exiled Duke's daughter, Rosalind (Elisabeth Bergner), however, to stay, as she is the closest friend of his daughter, Celia (Sophie Stewart). Orlando (Laurence Olivier), who has been forced to flee his home due to the oppression from his brother, Oliver (John Laurie), comes to the Frederick's Duchy, and enters a wrestling tournament. On leaving the Duchy, Orlando encounters Rosalind, and it is love at first sight. Frederick then becomes angry, and banishes Rosalind. Celia decides to accompany her, along with a jester, Touchstone (Mackenzie Ward).

L'histoire commence au moment d'un concert au cours duquel est donné le concerto en ré majeur de Beethoven pour violon et orchestre. Romaine, femme mystérieuse, est dans la salle de concert. Pierre, son mari, est premier violon de l’Orchestre Colonne. Ce soir-là, elle découvre Marcel, brillant soliste du concerto, et en tombe amoureuse. Pierre et Marcel sont amis, ce qui complique la situation. Pierre invite son ami à la maison, sans se douter de ce qui va se passer. La jeune femme, cherchant à trouver un habile prétexte pour un rendez-vous en tête-à-tête, révèle rapidement ses sentiments à Marcel. Ce dernier est sensible au charme de Romaine, mais ne souhaite pas trahir Pierre. Elle joue du piano, et tout serait presque simple si elle n’avait pas choisi d’aimer deux hommes – à l'amitié solide - en même temps.

1959, dans la Ruhr. John H. Claudius est l'héritier de l'aciérie Claudius et a vécu de nombreuses années aux États-Unis. Au cours des derniers jours de la guerre, son père est mort lors d'un bombardement. Cependant, John doute de l'histoire de la mort, croyant que son père a été assassiné. À son retour dans la Ruhr, sa mère Gertrud est mariée à son oncle Paul. La relation entre John et son beau-père est caractérisée par une méfiance mutuelle. Quand les amis de John, Mike R. Krantz et Stanley Goulden, viennent dans la ville avec leur compagnie de ballet, il veut utiliser leur aide pour prouver que l'oncle Paul est l'assassin de son père. Ils jouent un ballet dans lequel ils mettent en scène le meurtre du père de John. Mais John n'a aucune preuve du meurtre et est déclaré fou par Paul et Gertrud. Le Dr. von Pohl publie un rapport correspondant dans lequel John doit être amené dans une institution fermée. Mais John comprend ce que cache l'intrigue.
