The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee, Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor, Mohnish Bahl. It was the first film where Bachchan and Kumar worked together. The film is a family drama where a big family encounters a crisis when disputes take place between the father (Bachchan) and the son (Kumar). The film was planned to be a story about a father (Bachchan), his son (Kumar) and his daughter (Chawla), however till the time the film went in production stage, Chawla became pregnant, hence her role was changed to an extended guest appearance.
Synopsis
Vijay Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a successful businessman. He lives happily with his wife (Raakhee) and their four children. Ajay (Akshay Kumar), their only son who was studying abroad and has graduated from university, received an academic degree in Information Technology and came back home now.Actors

Orphaned when his mother dies of hunger, Babu (Akshay Kumar) is corrupted by Sultan, an ambitious criminal mastermind. He grows up to become "Badshah", a professional criminal working for Sultan. The story starts with Badshah and Abdul robbing a jewellery store and being chased by the police but the police lose track of them. The next day Badshah sees Sapna (Karishma Kapoor) singing and dancing for money. Badshah notices her ripped clothes and gives her money for new clothes and she says that he was the first person to realise that. Inspector Pradhan comes to Badshah and tells him that he knows that Badshah committed the robbery from the previous night. When Badshah and Abdul go to exchange weapons for money with other gangs, the police interrupts. Immediately, Badshah and Abdul run away and a car chase ensues between Inspector Pradhan, and Baadshah and Abdul. In the process, Badshah is shot in the arm and both their vehicles end up falling off a cliff and crashing to the ground. With Inspector Pradhan trapped in his vehicle, which is near exploding, Badshah helps Pradhan get out but Pradhan, whom is resolved to his duty, in his injured state tries to put him under arrest. Badshah knocks Pradhan out but the car explodes injuring Badshah.

The story begins starts with the birth of a baby girl, Raja Nandini, in the world of feudal landlords - Zamindars - whose word is law for the villagers who work on their land. Nandini's three brothers throw a feast in honor of the girl child. The young son of the local singer (who had died) is brought in to sing for the event. The three brothers raise Nandini like their own child as their parents had died. At the age of 5, an astrologer predicts that Nandini will bring much happiness to the family, but her marriage will based on her choice and not the choice of her brothers. This angers the brothers and to prevent this from happening, she is raised within the confines of the house. She is home schooled and when she does go out, all the men are warned to hide from Nandini and that seeing Nandini will be met with dire consequences.
