During a battle of the English Civil War, an alchemist's assistant named Whitehead flees from the strict Commander Trower. Whitehead meets Cutler and two army deserters, Jacob and Friend. Together they leave the battleground in search of an ale house. They encounter the Irishman O'Neill, a man whom Whitehead has been sent to apprehend for the theft of his master's works and literature. O'Neill quickly asserts authority over the group and tells them of a treasure hidden somewhere in a nearby field.

Two brothers, David and Peter (Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith), kidnap Tracey (Jennifer Ellison), the stepdaughter of Arnie (Steven Berkoff), an underworld crime boss. After a heated conversation at the kitchen table, Peter and David retrieve the unconscious Tracey from the car trunk. As they try to get her upstairs Peter gets sidetracked by her chest not realizing that she has woken up. She headbutts him several times and Peter screams with pain. David manages to get her off him and has to fix Peter's now bloody and broken nose after tying her to the bed frame. The pair hold her for ransom in a secluded country cottage. Things begin to go wrong when Arnie's dimwitted son and stepbrother of Tracey, Andrew (Steve O'Donnell) delivers the ransom. Instead of money, the bag is filled with napkins. David and Peter realize that not only have they been deceived, but Arnie knew about Andrew's involvement in the scheme all along.

Jimmy (Mathew Horne) and Fletch (James Corden) are two friends living in London experiencing life problems. Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) is a young woman in a small port town in Scotland. She wakes on Christmas morning to discover that her boyfriend has committed suicide, leaving a suicide note, mix tape and the manuscript of his unpublished novel behind. His novel is dedicated to her and she decides to erase his name and puts her own name on the novel and sends it to the publisher recommended by her boyfriend. Instead of arranging a funeral with the money on his account, as requested by him, she cuts his body up and buries it in the mountains. With the money she then escapes her work stacking fruit in the groceries section of the local supermarket and goes to Almería, Costa del Sol, with her best friend Lanna (Kathleen McDermott). As they go out and party she feels she's in a different mood than her and leaves her, also to be able to secretly meet the publishers who haven't hesitated to come meet her in Spain. She plays the role of a writer and sells the novel for £100,000. Back in Scotland she tries to convince Lanna to come with her to the big world, but in Spain she has met a guy from Leeds who plans to visit her. Morvern collects her suitcase and goes to the train station.

The Mass-Observation project was set up in 1937 by Charles Madge, a poet and journalist and Tom Harrison, an anthropologist to 'record the voice of ordinary people'. They recruited volunteer 'observers' to report to them and in 1939 invited people to send them an account of their lives. Nella Last was one of 500 people who took up this offer. Nella Last's war page vi. Her diaries sent weekly are headed "Housewife, 49", her age when she first began the correspondence. Nella Last's War page ii. Her diaries to Mass-Observation, often written in pencil, provide the narrative of the play as it unfolds her life. Edited versions of her diary have been published: Nella Last's War edited by Richard Broad and Suzy Fleming appeared first in 1981 and has been more recently re-published by Profile Books in 2007. Housewife, 49 is based on this book which covers the years 1939–45. Nella Last's Peace, which appeared in 2009, includes diary entries from her immediate post-war years. A third volume, Nella Last in the 1950s: Further diaries of Housewife, 49 which includes material not published in Nella Last's War was published in 2010.
