Au début des années 1990, l'auteure Lee Israel peine à renouer avec le succès de ses premiers livres. Sa nouvelle biographie sur Estée Lauder est un véritable échec. Dotée d'un caractère acariâtre et anticonformiste, elle ne fait rien pour s'adapter aux contraintes du monde littéraire et se brouille avec son éditeur. Elle sombre alors dans le syndrome de la page blanche et dans l'alcoolisme. Pressée par le manque d'argent, elle se résigne à vendre une lettre de Katharine Hepburn qu'elle avait encadrée. Elle va alors se découvrir un « don » : imiter à la perfection le style de grands écrivains et autres célébrités. Avec son ami Jack Hock, un homosexuel fantasque, elle monte une arnaque imparable, qui consiste à rédiger de fausses correspondances entre personnalités célèbres. Jack vend ensuite ces fausses lettres à des libraires de Greenwich Village, qui alimentent un marché florissant de collectionneurs passionnés. Mais les deux compères ne savent pas que le FBI s’intéresse désormais à eux.

The film follows 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain (Romola Garai), and the fortunes of her eccentric family, struggling to survive in genteel poverty in a decaying English castle. Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) is a young woman in a small port town in Scotland. She wakes on Christmas morning to discover that her boyfriend has committed suicide, leaving a suicide note, mix tape and the manuscript of his unpublished novel behind. His novel is dedicated to her and she decides to erase his name and puts her own name on the novel and sends it to the publisher recommended by her boyfriend. Instead of arranging a funeral with the money on his account, as requested by him, she cuts his body up and buries it in the mountains. With the money she then escapes her work stacking fruit in the groceries section of the local supermarket and goes to Almería, Costa del Sol, with her best friend Lanna (Kathleen McDermott). As they go out and party she feels she's in a different mood than her and leaves her, also to be able to secretly meet the publishers who haven't hesitated to come meet her in Spain. She plays the role of a writer and sells the novel for £100,000. Back in Scotland she tries to convince Lanna to come with her to the big world, but in Spain she has met a guy from Leeds who plans to visit her. Morvern collects her suitcase and goes to the train station.
