Escape from Zahrain is a 1962 American action film directed by Ronald Neame and starring Yul Brynner, Anthony Caruso, James Mason and Jack Warden.

The film is set in the fictional state of Zahrain, located in the Arabian Peninsula. The main characters are part of a group of condemned prisoners who flee across the desert in an attempt to reach the Protectorate of Aden. One is an American oil worker, another an Arab revolutionary and the third a British agent, providing different perspectives on the Middle East of the early 1960s. The film is based on the novel Appointment in Zahrain by Michael Barrett.

Synopsis

Dans le pays fictif de Zahrain, un leader nationaliste arabe est délivré par un groupe de jeunes partisans lors d'un transfert de prison. Fuyant la police nationale à ses trousses, il décide de voler une ambulance avec laquelle il compte se sauver, en rejoignant le pays voisin à travers le désert.

In 1865, the proletarian General Gurko Lanen becomes the behind the scenes dictator of the Grand Duchy of Lichtenburg located in the Balkans. Thorin and his company are being pursued by Azog and his Orc party following the events of the previous film. They are ushered along by Gandalf to the nearby home of Beorn, a skin-changer who can take the form of the bear. That night, Azog is summoned to Dol Guldur by the Necromancer, who commands him to marshal his forces for war. Azog then delegates the hunt for Thorin to his son Bolg. The following day, Beorn escorts the company to the borders of Mirkwood, where Gandalf discovers Black Speech imprinted on an old ruin. This coincides with a telepathic message from Galadriel urging him to investigate the tombs of the Nazgûl. He warns the company to remain on the path and leaves them. Upon entering the forest they lose their way and are ensnared by giant spiders. Bilbo then sets about freeing the dwarves with the help of his recently acquired invisibility ring. He subsequently drops the Ring and first begins to understand its dark influence after he brutally kills a centipede-like creature to retrieve it.

Jonathan Cabot (Thomas) is approached by the Special Intelligence Agency (SIA) to play "the Game". The Game is an athletic competition in the fictional country of Parmistan, a tiny mountain nation which is supposedly located in the Hindu Kush mountain range. Parmistan forces all foreigners to play the Game, which is basically an endurance race with obstacles, all the while being chased by local Parmistan warriors. If a person wins, then they are granted their life and a wish. The SIA wants Cabot to win the game so that he can use his wish to install a US satellite monitoring station, which could monitor all satellites in space and act as an early warning system in case of nuclear attack. Cabot is told that the system could save millions of lives. As an extra incentive, Cabot is also told that his father (who went missing) was actually a SIA operative who was sent to play the game but was never heard from again.
