Le scénario du film est inspiré de l'opéra comique d'Auber de 1830.

Synopsis

Tino Pattiera est un bandit italien, chef d'une bande de révolutionnaires, qui, déguisé en marquis, détrousse les riches de leurs objets de valeur et est déterminé à renverser les rois corrompus. Il se déguise en ambassadeur royal, intercepte un message important du Roi et, avec son amie Anita, organise sa révolution.

Glaucus, a centurion returning to his home in Pompeii after a spell in Palestine, arrives on the edge of town just in time to see Ione, the beautiful daughter of the city's Consul, lose control of her chariot. Glaucus saves Ione's life and then heads into town to see his father. On the way, Glaucus intervenes in defense of a thief named Antonius, who is being severely punished on orders given by Gallinus, a Praetorian Guard. On arriving at his father's house, Glaucus discovers that it has been looted and his father murdered by a band of ruthless hooded thieves who have been terrorizing the city, always leaving a cross painted on a wall as a calling card. Glaucus vows revenge against the killers.

Lake Como: Renzo and Lucia are two farmers who are in love. But the cruel and despotic Don Rodrigo impairs their marriage because he is secretly in love with Lucia. Antigonus, archon of Corinth, wants to build a magnificent temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, for which the people are oppressed by new and very high taxes.
