It is based on the Book of Genesis, first book of the Hebrew Bible, where creation of the world and Great Flood are described.
This film utilizes a cast of native Bedouins. Text of Genesis is read by a narrator, who at times appears as an elderly desert nomad telling the story to his extended Bedouin family.
Modern clips of warfare and destruction are used to illustrate some Old Testament pronouncements about the evils practiced by mankind. The script fairly accurately follows the first nine chapters of Genesis, with a few added portions, like excerpts from the Song of Songs, Leviticus 26, and Psalm 50.

À chaque obscurité survenue, Mel, le prêtre-astronome, et Rupo, son disciple, observent le ciel depuis les ruines d'une colline. Mel l'interprète comme l'accomplissement de la Prophétie, celle de la venue du Messie. Ils se mettent donc en route, suivis par de nombreux habitants, issus de toutes conditions sociales : notables, marchands, paysans, artisans, mendiants, voleurs ou prostituées, tous désirent célébrer l'événement et accomplir offrande au Sauveur futur. Au cours de ce long chemin, parsemé de risques et d'obstacles, et, au cours duquel hélas tous ne reviendront pas, deux caravanes s'unissent à eux. Ils découvrent enfin le Rédempteur dans un village retiré et sous les traits d'un nouveau-né. Ils lui rendent témoignage de piété et d'infini respect. Toutefois, il leur faut se méfier d'une ville-garnison voisine, soumise à un monarque despotique et envieux. Les pèlerins, craignant une éventuelle agression, se dispersent en effaçant toute trace de leur passage.

The general Sebastiano Procolo lives in a little village in the mountains boundless, in a small wooden house near a dense forest, called the "Old Woods". He is there on behalf of his nephew, owner of the reserve; however the general has the ambition to destroy all the trees in order to enrich. One night he discovers that the forest is inhabited by strange invisible creatures that whisper continually being released to resume again in the power of the ancient forest. The film consists of five main sections: The Creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, and the story of Abraham. There are also a pair of shorter sections, one recounting the building of the Tower of Babel, and the other the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The sections vary greatly in tone. The story of Abraham is somber and reverential, while that of Noah repeatedly focuses on his love of all animals—herbivorous and carnivorous or omnivorous. Cats (including lions) drink milk, with Noah's relationship with the animals being depicted harmoniously. It was originally conceived as the first in a series of films retelling the entire Old Testament, but these sequels were never made.
