Synopsis
Dans la vallée de la Durance, en réaménagement à cause de la construction du barrage de Serre-Ponçon, le décès d'un propriétaire terrien fait que sa jeune fille Hortense devient la seule héritière des 30 millions de francs perçus comme indemnité d'expropriation. La richesse de la mineure éveille la convoitise de certains membres de la famille. Ils vont user de tous les stratagèmes, de la séduction à la violence, pour essayer de s'approprier son magot. Mais Hortense, éprise de liberté comme l'eau vive de la Durance, glissera toujours entre leurs doigts pour trouver finalement l'accalmie auprès de son oncle chéri, le berger Simon…Actors

Une nuit d'été, Pierre Menda, un homme qui paraît être à la dérive et marche sans but le long d'une petite route de la Côte d'Azur, est accosté par un luxueux cabriolet blanc. Sans un mot, sa conductrice, une femme dont il ne distingue que la longue chevelure blonde, l'invite à monter, ouvre son manteau sous lequel elle est nue et se donne à lui. Looking for a job Toni goes from Italy to Southern France. A local woman named Marie takes him in as her tenant and becomes his lover. But when the Spanish guestworker Josepha comes to town, Toni falls for her. To his disappointment Josepha has a wedding with a wealthier man. So Toni marries Marie after all but he cannot hide that Josepha was his greatest love. After Marie has thrown him out of her house he is determined to see Josepha again. He finds her on a farm in the mountains where she lives with her increasingly abusive husband. Josepha is about to run away and for that purpose she steals money from her spouse who catches and hits her. While Toni is around she kills the man. Toni sacrifices himself in order to cover up for her.

Jacques Mazel, the son of a wealthy merchant, and Patricia Amoretti, daughter of a well-digger, live in a small village in the Provence region of France while Europe is at the brink of World War I. She has just turned 18 and is smitten with the handsome Jacques when he carries her across a stream to bring lunch to her father who is digging a well. After their second encounter Jacques, a French Air Force pilot, is unexpectedly reassigned. He must leave immediately to replace a pilot who recently broke his leg. Because he cannot meet Patricia as planned the next morning, he leaves an explanatory letter for her but his overly protective mother burns the letter. Patricia concludes Jacques rejected her because they come from different social classes. Later, Patricia discovers that Jacques has left her with child. The parents of Jacques reject the idea that their son conceived a child out of wedlock and refuse to acknowledge the baby. Her father, who had idolized her, sends Patricia to live with his sister in another village to spare his four other daughters from learning of the illegitimate child. Patricia declines an offer of marriage from her father's friend, Félipe, partly because her younger sister, Amanda, has a crush on him. Eventually, Jacques, who was thought to have been shot down by the Germans, returns from a POW camp and learns he has a son.

Le capitaine Le Quévic est chargé par les autorités maritimes de Marseille de renflouer l'épave de "La Vénus" qui risque d'obstruer l'entrée du chenal. Rempli d'appréhension, le propriétaire du navire, Mr Black, contrebandier et assassin, essaie d'empêcher à tout prix le renflouement, le cadavre d'une jeune fille se trouvant à bord. Il soudoie le scaphandrier Michel, coéquipier de Le Quévic, mais le jeune homme refuse d'être le complice d'un meurtre. La police alertée par Le Quévic qui a découvert la sinistre cargaison, traque Mr Black et sa bande qui avaient séquestré Michel et son amie Martine, sœur de la jeune fille assassinée. Les bandits arrêtés, Le Quévic lui aussi amoureux de Martine s'efface devant la jeunesse des amoureux et reprend la mer.
