A young woman is acquitted by the jury over the murder of her husband, who died in suspicious circumstances. The film then flashes back to portray the events leading up to his death. Sally Raynor's aviator husband Martin has been missing for two years and is believed dead, during which time she has fallen in love with a local doctor who she plans to marry. When her husband unexpectedly returns from Brazil still alive, she decides to give up Doctor Harper and go back to live with him. Soon her husband's erratic behaviour, brought on by his ordeals, makes her believe he is insane. On one of his wild night time walks, he appears to have killed someone. His wife plans to kill him to protect him from society's punishment, but before she does he commits suicide. Although technically innocent of his death, she is haunted by guilt and even after a jury clears her of murder she is hesitant to murder the Doctor she loves., 1h18

Freelance assassin Hawkins (Sim) has plans to blow up Sir Gregory Upshott, a Cabinet minister (Huntley) when the latter is discovered to be having an affair, about to be consummated at the Green Man Hotel. However his plans are accidentally uncovered and foiled by vacuum cleaner salesman Blake (Cole) who forges an unlikely alliance with Ann (Adams), engaged to be married to a rather stuffy BBC announcer, Willoughby-Cruft (Gordon). The latter relationship breaks down when Willoughby-Cruft finds his fiancée under their bed with Blake and later, in her lingerie, accidentally entangled on the floor with him. As such, there are some romantic (and not-at-all romantic) interludes and Hawkins briefly has the task of trying to deal with Upshott's secretary, a friendly policeman, and prepare his bomb at the same time., 1h24

The impecunious owner of a haunted Scottish castle has to juggle the advances of an American heiress who wishes to buy him out, the love of his longtime assistant who wants to marry him, and a Coal Board official who wishes to commandeer the estate. The British National Coal Board wants to annex the owner's castle as a group home for local miners and their families. Wealthy, much-married American Mrs. Clodfelter Dunne (Barbara Kelly) wants to claim the castle—and its owner, the Earl of Locharne (David Tomlinson)--for herself. Meanwhile, eccentric boarder Miss Nicholson (Margaret Rutherford) is obsessed with the idea that the Earl is actually the rightful King of Scotland. There is also a beautiful ghost, played by Patricia Dainton. "Castle in the Air" was based on the popular stage play by Alan Melville.
