At a dinner celebrating the 70th birthday of their father Henry Meyerwitz (Ron Rifkin), tensions among the four Meyerwitz siblings explode thanks to the success of the youngest son, Nathan (Ben Schwartz), whose new novel Peep World is a thinly veiled portrait of the family. The best-selling expose reveals the oldest, "responsible" son, Jack (Michael C. Hall), as a porn addict, the daughter, Cheri (Sarah Silverman), as a catty drama queen, and the third son, Joel (Rainn Wilson), as a living disaster with a loony plan to change his life.

Roger (Jon Heder) is a downtrodden meter reader, subject to ridicule from co-workers and regular denizens, who dreams of dating the foreign graduate student who lives in his building, Amanda (Jacinda Barrett). To overcome his lack of self-esteem, he signs up for a course taught by Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton) where Roger and his classmates are constantly bullied by Dr. P and his assistant Lesher (Michael Clarke Duncan), who likes to use outrageous and unethical methods on them, including humiliation. Some tasks they are required to do are quite cruel and primitive – like the task to start a conflict or even a fight with somebody they meet just to prove they are fearless. However, nobody intends to quit the course because Dr. P says he won't give a refund of $5,000 to anyone who quits or disobeys the orders given to them. The classmates even warn Roger that Dr. P will destroy him if his progress is too fast, just like he has done to one of his former students.

Alberta leaves her small hometown to move to the city, and she moves in with her former babysitter, Celene, who wears thigh high boots and is now a professional dominatrix. Out of money, Alberta decides to impersonate her roommate's identity, lured by the $300 per hour pay rate. While working with her first client, Paul, three men break into the house, believing that Paul stole half a million dollars from them. Paul defends himself, saying that whatever money he has, he had won at the casino. Alberta flees the scene, grabbing Paul's money on her way out, which leads the robbers to believe that she is involved with the theft as well. For the rest of the movie, Alberta and Celene try to deal with the three robbers, and rescue Paul from them.
