À la fin de l'époque victorienne à Londres, l'artiste-peintre Louis Dubedat est atteint de la tuberculose. Sa femme Jennifer, follement amoureuse d'un mari qu'elle idéalise, ne peut se résoudre à le voir disparaître. Elle va demander à l'éminent spécialiste Sir Colenso Ridgeon de tenter le tout pour le tout afin de le sauver. Le docteur a tellement de patients qu'il ne peut traiter en priorité que certains cas extrêmes et Jennifer le convainc (en même temps qu'il est séduit par son charme) en lui présentant des œuvres de son mari en qui le docteur reconnaît un grand artiste. Mais en prenant Louis en charge, le docteur et son équipe découvrent que l'artiste est doublé d'un escroc qui est, de surcroît, bigame, marié à une autre femme qu'il a abandonnée. Le docteur est confronté à un dilemme, entravé, en plus, par les sentiments qu'il éprouve pour Jennifer : soit laisser l'artiste s'éteindre en préservant les illusions de Jennifer, soit tenter de le sauver en dévoilant à celle-ci la bigamie et les autres travers de son mari.

Duke Frederick (Felix Aylmer) has usurped and deposed his older brother, Duke Senior (Henry Ainley). Frederick allows the exiled Duke's daughter, Rosalind (Elisabeth Bergner), however, to stay, as she is the closest friend of his daughter, Celia (Sophie Stewart). Orlando (Laurence Olivier), who has been forced to flee his home due to the oppression from his brother, Oliver (John Laurie), comes to the Frederick's Duchy, and enters a wrestling tournament. En revenant d'Europe, Tom Palmer rencontre Nan Brockton et son père George Brockton, sans savoir que ce sont des voleurs de bijoux. Les Brockton louent une maison à Long Island, près de celle des Palmer. Ils y habitent avec Steve Wilson, un tueur qui se fait passer pour leur maître d'hôtel, et Toni Verdi, qui se fait passer pour un professeur de musique. Comme elle l'espérait, Nan est invitée chez les Palmer et, sur place, elle demande s'ils veulent bien garder ses bijoux dans leur coffre, ce qui lui permet d'en découvrir la combinaison. Lorsqu'un certain Hanley de la fondation Carnegie se présente pour discuter avec Tom de l'homme qu'il a sauvé de la noyade pendant la croisière, les Brockton craignent qu'il ne s'agisse de Ferris, un célèbre détective que personne n'a jamais vu. Plus tard, Tom et sa "famille", en fait eux-mêmes un gang de voleurs, spéculent eux aussi sur l'identité de Ferris. Une nuit, Tom et M. Palmer se rendent chez les Brockton pour les cambrioler, pendant que Nan en fait de même chez les Palmer, aidée par Toni et Steve. Nan réussit son coup, mais Tom et Palmer sont pris. Nan est heureuse de découvrir que Tom est lui-même un voleur, et il lui propose de s'enfuir avec les bijoux. La police encercle les deux maisons et ils ont tous arrêtés, mais Tom est relâché et placé sous la garde de Ferris, qui s'avère être Nan. Nan dit à Tom que la cour devrait être clémente car il l'a aidée, et qu'elle l'attendra.

"B for Bertie" is an RAF Vickers Wellington bomber whose crew was forced to bail out over the Netherlands near the Zuider Zee after one of their engines was damaged during a nighttime raid on Stuttgart. Five of the six airmen find each other; the sixth goes missing. The first Dutch citizens they encounter, led by English-speaking schoolteacher Else Meertens (Pamela Brown), are suspicious at first as no aircraft is reported to have crashed in the Netherlands (the abandoned bomber actually reaches England before hitting a pylon). After much debate and some questioning, the Dutch agree to help, despite their fear of German reprisals.
