Synopsis

Hillsborough est le nom du stade de Sheffield où se déroula, le 15 avril 1989, la Tragédie de Hillsborough, qui fit 96 morts parmi les supporters de Liverpool FC. On suit l'histoire de quatre familles touchées par le drame.

Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood), a journalism major, is expelled from Harvard University after cocaine is discovered in his room. However, the cocaine belongs to Jeremy Van Holden (Terence Jay), his roommate. Buckner is afraid to speak up because the Van Holdens are a powerful family, and Jeremy offers him $10,000 for taking the fall. Matt doesn't initially accept the money, but reconsiders and uses the money to visit his sister Shannon (Claire Forlani), her husband Steve Dunham (Marc Warren) and their young son, Ben (James Allison) living in London. There, Matt meets Steve's brother, Pete (Charlie Hunnam), an acerbic and imposing Cockney who leads the local football hooligan firm - a group of football supporters that arranges fights after matches - and teaches at a local school. Steve asks Pete to take Matt to a football match between West Ham United and Birmingham City, though Pete is reluctant to take a "Yank" to a football match, because of the xenophobic attitude of his friends. He is persuaded because Steve will only give the money Pete needs to Matt. After defeating Matt in a fight, Pete decides to take Matt to the football match, thinking he might learn something about football.

Most of the characters in the film are not named. A girl disguises herself as a boy to go attend the 2006 World Cup qualifying match between Iran and Bahrain. She travels by bus with a group of male fans, some of whom notice her gender, but do not tell anyone. At the stadium, she persuades a reluctant ticket tout to sell her a ticket; he only agrees to do so at an inflated price. The girl tries to slip through security, but she is spotted and arrested. She is put in a holding pen on the stadium roof with several other women who have also been caught; the pen is frustratingly close to a window onto the match, but the women are at the wrong angle to see it.

8 Mai 2006 : l’Iran est en passe de se qualifier pour la coupe du monde de football. Un car de supporters déchaînés est en route vers le stade. Une fille déguisée en garçon s’est discrètement glissée parmi eux elle ne sera pas la seule à tenter de transgresser l’interdiction faite aux femmes d’assister aux manifestations sportives. A l’entrée du stade, elle est démasquée et confiée à la brigade des mœurs qui devra décider de son sort. Enfermée dans un enclos improvisé, elle est très vite rejointe par d’autres filles. Ensemble, elles refusent d’abandonner et usent de toutes les techniques pour voir le match.
