1842-1844, l’histoire de la famille Simon. Johann le père forgeron, Margret la mère, Lena la fille ainée, Gustav et Jakob les fils, Jettchen et Florinchen leurs futures épouses. Les coups du destin risquent de détruire cette famille mais c’est une histoire de courage et de foi en l’avenir. Des dizaines de milliers d’Allemands, accablés par les famines, la pauvreté et l’arbitraire des gouvernants, émigrent en Amérique du Sud. "Un sort meilleur que la mort, ça peut se trouver partout". Jakob Simon le cadet, lit tous les livres qu’il peut se procurer, il étudie les langues des Indiens d’Amazonie. Il rêve d’un monde meilleur, d’aventure, de dépaysement et de liberté. Il décide d’émigrer. Le retour de son frère Gustav du service militaire dans l’armée prussienne déclenche une série d’évènements qui met à rude épreuve l’amour de Jakob et bouleverse son existence.Actors

Heimat Heimat, the original series, premiered in 1984 and follows the life of Maria Simon (Marita Breuer), a woman living in the fictional village of Schabbach (the village of Woppenroth in Rhein-Hunsrück, a very rural region of Germany to the west of the Rhine, was used for filming). The film spans the years 1919 to 1982. The story begins in countryside near Vienna in 1791. The hero sees a runaway hot-air balloon with a distressed lady inside crying for help. He pursues it, never having seen such a thing before. The family look after him for a while in return for his part in the rescue and he reads a book concerning flight. He already has a fascination with birds and how they fly. Through the family, the Morettis from Italy, he meets an existing experimenter in human flight, Irma Moretti's fiance, Jakob von Degen, and is invited to a public demonstration of his flying machine.

Automne allemand 1977, la Fraction armée rouge (RAF) terrorise la République fédérale d’Allemagne pour libérer ses figures historiques. Deux célébrations de funérailles à deux jours d'intervalle à Stuttgart ponctuent le récit. La première est l'enterrement du patron des patrons, exécuté par les terroristes de la RAF après la nuit de la mort de leurs leaders retrouvés suicidés dans leurs cellules de Stammheim quelques heures après l'annonce de la libération des otages du détournement du Landshut. La seconde est l'enterrement des suicidés de Stammheim sous haute surveillance policière. Dix réalisateurs du nouveau cinéma allemand témoignent de cette accélération des événements en mettant en scène des fictions et courts documentaires historiques pour restituer le climat de terreur quotidienne inspirée par la RAF tout en s'interrogeant sur la pression étatique nécessaire à la traque de terroristes dans un pays démocratique.
