In Danger and Deep Distress, the Middleway Spells Certain Death (German: In Gefahr und größter Not bringt der Mittelweg den Tod) is a 1974 drama film directed by Alexander Kluge and Edgar Reitz. It is set in Frankfurt and tells the story of two women, one who sleeps with many men and steals their wallets, and one who is a spy for East Germany. The film mimics the style of documentaries, with actual documentary footage from the city as well as essayistic parts.

It was released in Germany on 18 December 1974. It received the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Editing and Best Musical Dramaturgy.

Synopsis

C'est l'histoire de deux femmes à Francfort : Inge Maier, qui couche avec de nombreux hommes et qui leur dérobe leurs affaires personnelles, et de l'espionne est-allemande Rita Müller-Eisert.

1842-1844, l’histoire de la famille Simon. Johann le père forgeron, Margret la mère, Lena la fille ainée, Gustav et Jakob les fils, Jettchen et Florinchen leurs futures épouses. Il décide d’émigrer. Le retour de son frère Gustav du service militaire dans l’armée prussienne déclenche une série d’évènements qui met à rude épreuve l’amour de Jakob et bouleverse son existence.

The story begins in countryside near Vienna in 1791. The hero sees a runaway hot-air balloon with a distressed lady inside crying for help. He pursues it, never having seen such a thing before.
