The film is based on a play by the famous Neapolitan writer Eduardo Scarpetta, father of Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The story is set in Naples and Sorrento in the second half of 1800. Mary Vantyne et son mari Andrew sont invités chez une vieille amie de Mary, Isabelle Lenwright, qui contrairement à Mary a épousé un homme riche.
