Add to a movie listThe Great Appeal (Italian:Il Grande appello) is a 1936 Italian war film directed by Mario Camerini and starring Camillo Pilotto, Roberto Villa and Lina d'Acosta. It is sometimes known by the alternative title The Last Roll-Call. Camerini was considered to have no sympathies with the Fascist regime of Italy, but he made this propaganda film that endorsed the colonial policies of the Italian government. It was one of a number of African-set films made during the Fascist era including The White Squadron (1936), Sentinels of Bronze (1937) and Luciano Serra, Pilot (1938). The film portrays the rediscovery of his patriotism of an Italian, who eventually dies for his country.
Synopsis
Giovanni Bertani is a rootless Italian emigrant who is currently running a hotel in French-ruled Djibouti, while selling arms to the Abyssinian forces fighting the Italians in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War although his son Enrico is serving on the other side. Following a journey to Abyssinia Giovanni regains his sense of Italian identity, and is fatally wounded blowing up the shipment of arms to the Abyssinians.Actors

L'action se déroule en Tripolitaine, alors province de l'Empire ottoman, à la veille de la Guerre italo-turque (1911-1912). Dans la cité caravanière de Ksar Karabuli, le fils aîné d'une riche famille, Ismail Temsichet, ne cesse d'encenser l'Europe de laquelle il revient. Le fils cadet demeure, a contrario, attaché aux traditions musulmanes. Au cours de ses traversées à cheval dans le désert, Ismail rencontre deux bergères, Gamra et Mnè. Il s'éprend de la dernière. C'est aussi, à ce moment-là, que l'Italie déclare la guerre à la Turquie afin de conquérir la Tripolitaine. La cavalerie turque surgit et réquisitionne préventivement troupeaux et armes appartenant aux tribus. Effrayées, les deux jeunes femmes s'enfuient à travers les dunes. Gamra, aveugle, est mordue par un serpent et décède ensuite. Mnè, à la recherche de secours, est prise par un soldat turc, tandis que la ville de Ksar Karabuli est saccagée par les militaires ottomans. Averti, Ismail parvient à sauver Mnè et la prend sous sa protection. Il la conduit chez lui et la confie à son vieux serviteur Taleb. Rassim, un puissant voisin, convoite la jeune femme : Ismail déjoue ses ruses et le tue. La guerre éclate : Ismail doit abandonner Mnè pour guider, à son corps défendant, l'armée locale contre les Italiens. Cependant, il est rapidement accusé de traîtrise et les Turcs l'emprisonnent au fort de Kassarmut. Dégradé, Ismail est condamné à mort. N'écoutant que ses sentiments, Mnè, accompagnée de Taleb, entreprend de le sauver. Or, le fort est maintenant sévèrement bombardé par les détachements italiens et, de fait, l'exécution d'Ismail ne peut avoir lieu. Dans le tumulte créé par les affrontements armés, Ismail et Mnè se retrouvent et s'étreignent. Un carton apparaît alors, mentionnant ceci : "Le drapeau italien flotte sur Kassarmut.

Le film raconte l'histoire de Scipion l'Africain (interprété par Annibale Ninchi) pendant la Deuxième guerre punique au III siècle av. J.-C., après la bataille de Cannes. The film depicts warfare as witnessed exclusively from the inside of a tank. The crew's window to the outside world is a gunsight. As a way of adding realism to the effect, every change in the horizontal and vertical viewing directions is accompanied by the hydraulic whine of the traversing gun turret. The film is set during the 1982 Lebanon War. There are four Israeli soldiers inside: the driver in the tank's hull, the loader, the gunner and the commander in the turret. For part of the time there is also the body of a dead Israeli soldier (kept there until it is airlifted away), a Syrian POW, a visiting higher officer, and a visiting Phalangist (Lebanese Maronite Catholic allied with Israel) who threatens the POW with torture and a gruesome death.

The film is based on true events: In 1978 approximately 3000 heavily armed fighters from Katanga crossed the border to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and marched into Kolwezi, a mining centre for copper and cobalt. They took 3000 civilians as hostages. Within a few days between 90 and 280 hostages were killed. The rebels appeared to be unpredictable and are reported to have threatened to annihilate all civilians. The Congo's head of state Mobutu urged Belgium, France and the USA to help. France sent the Foreign Legion's 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment who were flown from Corsica to Kolwezi. Following their arrival they secured the perimeter in cooperation with Belgian soldiers from Zaire and then started to evacuate the civilists. Within two days more than 2000 Europeans and about 3000 African citizens were saved. The film strives to depict these events in a dramatised form, concentrating on the Europeans' plight.

A British unit at Tobruk is attacked by the German Afrika Korps, in the Western Desert Campaign of World War II. Three Australian Army officers of the Bushveldt Carbineers serving in South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) are being court-martialed for war crimes. Lieutenants Harry "Breaker" Morant, Peter Handcock, and George Witton are accused of the murder of one Boer POW and the subsequent massacre of six more.
