After meeting a general, war correspondent Dick Ennis (Robert Mitchum) is assigned to accompany US Army Rangers for the upcoming attempt to outflank the tough enemy defenses. The amphibious landing is unopposed, but the bumbling American general, Jack Lesley (Arthur Kennedy) is too cautious, preferring to fortify his beachhead before advancing inland. Ennis and a Ranger drive in a jeep through the countryside, discovering there are few Germans between the beachhead and Rome, but his information is ignored. As a result, the German commander, Kesselring (Wolfgang Preiss), has time to gather his forces and launch an effective counterattack.

During World War II, the people of Naples are forced to work in slave camps by the occupying Germans. They grow tired of the oppression, and revolt against the invaders, armed with any weapon they can find. The revolt lasts four days, and they eventually drive the Germans from the city before the arrival of allied troops, advancing from the Salerno beach head.

Rome, 8 septembre 1943 : Danilo, étudiant à l'université, échappe à l'enrôlement pendant que son ami Michele, un jeune comptable craintif, qui était déjà dans un train en direction du Nord avec d'autres employés de son ministère, parvient à retourner à Rome, où il a laissé sa fiancée Ida. Vaincu par la peur, toutefois, il se joint à Danilo pour chercher à dépasser la Ligne gothique. Par hasard, ils font la connaissance de Gino (Tomás Milián), qui se joint à eux quand le tramway des Châteaux sur lequel ils voyagent est arrêté par les Allemands. Tous les trois se réfugient dans une cave où se cache un groupe de soldats déserteurs, commandés par Orlando (Renato Salvatori). Ils sont ensuite rejoints par le partisan Edoardo (Romolo Valli), qui leur donne la charge de faire sauter un pont utilisé pour ravitailler les troupes allemandes. Le groupe se procure l'explosif nécessaire au sabotage mais se disperse en apprenant la capture d'Edoardo par les Allemands. Danilo, Michele et Gino retournent à Rome, où ils apprennent la mort d'Edoardo, qui a confié à ses camarades le soin d'accomplir le sabotage. Profondément mûris, les trois jeunes protagonistes décident de mener à terme la mission : ayant rejoint Orlando, ils réussiront à faire sauter le pont. Dans l'opération, Michele perdra la vie, rachetant par un geste de véritable héros une vie vécue dans la terreur.

The story is taken from the Eduardo Scarpetta's play: Naples, 1800. The poor Felice Sciosciamocca tries to work being a scribe for ignorant people, while his friend Don Pasquale tries to make photographs for rich couples. Meanwhile in the house where the two live, their wives start to fight because the apartment is mortgaged, and the women don't have money to pay the rent. Luckily rich Count Luigino, in love with the beautiful dancer Gemma, asks Pasquale and Felice to stage a farce for him. In fact the parents of Gemma want to meet Luigino's family, but he knows that his real father does not approve his love affair with the dancer. So Luigino transforms Don Felice Sciosciamocca into his uncle: Prince of Casadores, and Don Pasquale has to play the true father of Luigino. The young count entrusts a false part to play to all members of the two families, except the second wife of Felice: Concetta. Unfortunately Count Luigino cannot find a role for her, and Concetta gets very angry. While Felice Sciosciammocca and Pasquale're argue in the beautiful villa of Don Gaetano, Gemma's father, Concetta bursts in the home, and tries to compromise the plan organized by Luigino. Fortunately Don Felice manages to fix the situation and in the end, all is happily resolved.

The film is based on a play by the famous Neapolitan writer Eduardo Scarpetta, father of Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The story is set in Naples and Sorrento in the second half of 1800. The thief Felice Sciosciammocca (the surname in Naples means "one who is always with her mouth open in astonishment"; Felice means "Happy") together with the bandit Faina ("Weasel") escapes from prison and meets with a eunuch Turkish that he should go to Sorrento for a service. Don Felice kidnaps him and steals his letter of recommendation to get into the house of the rich man who had been sent the Turkish, so that gains a bit 'of money for him and for his accomplice. The man who had called the Turkish is the rich grocer Don Pasquale, being jealous of his wife and young daughter, betrothed to Don Carluccio holding a dowry, is to host the Don Felice robes Turkish and immediately test some suspicion. In fact, the Turkish rather than look like a eunuch protector proves to be a great womanizer and causes the sympathy of all the girls in the country and the wrath of the young. Don Felice, forgetting appears Faina, have fun in monitoring the wife and daughter of Pasquale and Don Carluccio appears more and more restless by the net waste of his betrothed. In the days to follow Don Felice will be met with the Honourable Cocchetelli who had recommended the real Turkish to Don Pasquale, but can not reveal the truth because Don Felice surprised him with a girl who was not his wife.
