In God We Tru$t is a comedy film starring Marty Feldman, Andy Kaufman, Louise Lasser and Peter Boyle. A biting religious satire, it was also produced, directed, and co-written by Marty Feldman.

Synopsis

A naive monk, Brother Ambrose (Feldman), is sent by the abbot on a mission to raise $5000 in order to save their monastery from closing. He goes to Hollywood where he encounters a number of eccentric characters. He is at first robbed and later befriended by con artist Dr. Sebastian Melmoth (Boyle), and meets a prostitute named Mary (Lasser) who lets him stay at her apartment. Mary grows to care for Ambrose and seduces him while he is taking a cold shower to try to alleviate his lustful thoughts about her. While he is in Hollywood, he visits several churches including a service at the Church of Divine Profit, performed by the televangelist Armageddon T. Thunderbird (Kaufman) in which he sees the focus of the sermon being a request for money in exchange for salvation. Ambrose is angered by this message and tries to meet a number of times with Thunderbird, being ejected each time.

At the airport Marjane Satrapi (Chiara Mastroianni) is unable to board a plane to Iran. She then takes a seat and smokes. She looks back at her childhood. Réda (Nicolas Cazalé) is a French-Moroccan teenager due to sit for Baccalauréat. As both embark on a road trip thousands of kilometres away from southern France, the once-icy father-and-son relationship starts to thaw as both gradually come to know each other. Réda speaks only in French to his father, who is seen speaking only Arabic for the majority of the film. Later, when necessary, the father proves that he in fact speaks impeccable French; his choice to speak only Arabic to his son is therefore purposeful.

Alby Sherman is a Jewish man whose father died when he was young. Un prêtre marche en priant dans un couvent puis sort de scène. Un diable apparaît dans le baptistère. Il tire les cloches, et se change en prêtre lorsque passent plusieurs religieuses. Il doit alors leur faire la messe. Il se rechange alors en diable. Effrayées, elles s’enfuient, alors que lui fait disparaître le baptistère et les chaises. Il fait ensuite apparaître des gargouilles et des diablotins. Une immense figure diabolique apparaît, se change en grosse grenouille, et le diable la chevauche sous les applaudissements de ses affidés, qui se sont saisis de leur fourche et dansent. Finalement, les religieuses avec leurs croix font tout disparaître. Le diable se bat alors avec un gentilhomme, puis avec le prêtre. Une cérémonie religieuse arrive, avec un ange armé, qui terrasse le diable.

Et pourtant, pas plus qu'avant, la « Belle » ne consent à les aimer.
