Japón (Spanish: Japan) is a 2002 film by the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas. It was Reygadas' debut feature.

Synopsis

The film follows a man going through an acute existential crisis. He leaves Mexico City to go out to the country and prepare for his death, staying with an old Indian widow in her ramshackle home overlooking a desolate canyon. In the vastness of a wild and impressive nature, he confronts the infinite humanity of the widow and oscillates between cruelty and lyricism. His senses become dull, arousing his desires and instincts for sexuality and life.

Silent Light begins with a long tracking shot of the sun rising over a beautiful plain. The protagonist Johan, his wife Esther, and their children sit silently saying grace, after which each member of Johan's family departs from their home except for him. Once he is alone, he stops the clock on the wall and breaks down crying. Johan goes to work and discusses with a colleague that he is having an affair with a single woman by the name of Marianne; he makes it clear that his wife knows about the affair. Johan leaves work to meet Marianne in a field, and they begin to kiss. In the next scene, Johan's children are bathing and playing along a riverbank while he and his wife watch. They call one of their children over to bathe her, and as they are doing so, Esther begins to cry.

The film deals with a peculiar narrative, the life of John (Adolfo Jimenez Castro). A wealthy householder who, with his wife Natalia (Nathalia Acevedo) and their two young sons Eleazar (Eleazar Reygadas) and Ruth (Ruth Reygadas), decide to change the life of the city for the plain and simple country life. Starting again with an ostentatious house (a comparison of the few neighbors who live there) begin to enjoy the momentary taste of rural life seems to evoke. Thus, the gradient taste that prevailed at the beginning, begins to crumble for marriage. The children, on the other hand, nothing cumbersome and enjoy perfect life offered by this bleak place. The character of John begins to have contact with the people who live in the same direction. Seven (Willebaldo Torres), a man who usually do everything in their power to survive leads him to meet Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are taken into a ramshackle cabin in the woods. The film takes us into the hands of the most intimate problems that each of the people shrinks, not to feed a superficial argument, but each character is interfered in the problems affecting the daily life of a rural culture. Where the world is cruel and life is harder.
