After his business partner leaves him penniless, Parvati's husband passes away, leaving behind two sons, Prabhakar (Satyen Kappu), Sudhakar (Jeetendra) and a dumb daughter Gauri (Meena T), on the verge of destitution. When Prabhakar grows up, he marries Pooja (Kanan Kaushal) and moves out. Meanwhile, as time passes, Sudhakar grows up, completes his schooling, gets a job out of the town and relocates. When Gauri is not allowed to marry Murli (Asrani), she commits suicide and so does Murli, calling for Sudhakar back home. Sudhakar marries wealthy Padma (Leena Chandavarkar) and brings her home. Padma dislikes playing second fiddle even to Parvati leading to disagreements in the household. Padma's pregnancy too fails to resolve any of the problems. Thus the couple re-locates to Padma's palatial house in the city, leaving an ailing Parvati on her own. The rest of the film shows how Padma understands the value of family ties and brothers, Prabhakar and Sudhakar, get together to unite the family.

Ramdev Bakshi (Dev Anand) is a peaceful, quiet man who is only interested in wildlife and nature. He is sent then to the Indo-Chinese border in the army by his father, a war hero. Here he refuses to lift his gun and attack. He is then court-martialled. Later he is captured by the Chinese and humiliated, but when a beautiful Chinese agent promises him a better future by working and spying for her (against India), he agrees but foils their wicked plans by spying over them. Later the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 breaks out. He joins in the action to show what he is made of by killing Pakistani soldiers hiding in the bushes in an Indian village in the Khemkaran sector.

The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Ghalib falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Chaudvin; however, tragedy befalls their ill-fated relationship. Set in a historical background, the film deals with the eternal psychological and social problems in the career of a genius poet. This film portrays one aspect of life of Mirza Ghalib (born 27 December 1797; died 15 February 1869, at age 73) in which the conflict between love and loyalty had deeply affected a sensitive artist. Mirza Ghalib fails to make an impression at the Royal Court 'Mushaira' of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar but at the same time, unknowingly wins the heart of Chaudvin, an accomplished court dancer.
