Divya Om Prakash Bharti (also known as Sana Nadiadwala after marriage; 1974 – 1993) was an Indian film actress and model, who starred in a number of commercially successful Hindi and Telugu motion pictures in the early 1990s.
Born in a South Indian family in Bombay, Bharti was widely recognized as one of the finest actresses of her time. She started to get film offers as early as 14 years of age. At the age of 16, Bharti made her on-screen debut with a leading role in the Telugu drama Bobbili Raja (1990). After starring in a number of popular Telugu films, she then progressed to Bollywood (Hindi) films in 1992 with the action thriller Vishwatma. Bharti went on to have commercial success alongside top actors Rishi Kapoor and Govinda in films like Shola Aur Shabnam and Deewana, the latter of which garnered her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She acted in over 14 Hindi films between 1992 and early 1993 which is to date an unbroken record for a newcomer in Bollywood.
Bharti died on 5 April 1993 at the age of 19 after falling off the balcony of her five-story apartment in Versova. Her cause of falling was never officially confirmed. Biography
Divya loved to swim and engage in other activities at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club in Mumbai along with her brother Kunal. Her parents noticed her interest in acting at a young age since Bharti used to skip studies in order to imitate the dance moves of the most recent Bollywood films at that time, such as the 1983 hit film Himmatwala, starring Sridevi and one of Divya's most favourite actors, Jeetendra. She occasionally visited the Siddhivinayak Temple and loved to eat their Modaks.
Bharti met Sajid Nadiadwala through Govinda at the shooting of Shola Aur Shabnam. Soon both Bharti and Nadiadwala fell in love with each other. Bharti converted to Islam and adopted the name Sana, and married to Sajid Nadiadwala on 10 May 1992 at Mumbai in an Islamic wedding ceremony.
Death and aftermath
On 5 April 1993 (eleven months after her marriage to Sajid Nadiadwala), around 11:45 PM, Bharti fell off the balcony of her five-story Tulsi apartment building and landed on the ground floor car park in Versova, Mumbai. Neighbours heard a loud "thud" and after investigating found Bharti unconscious and drenched in blood at the bottom of the building. In shock, the neighbours called the police and the ambulance. Bharti died in the ambulance before they could reach a hospital. Her cause of falling was never officially confirmed. There was much speculation by the media regarding Bharti's sudden demise, including the possibility of accidental death, suicide, conspiracy or even murder. Bombay Police failed to find sufficient evidences to charge anyone and hence closed the investigation and labelled it as accidental death in 1998. However, some Police theories suggested the involvement of her husband Sajid Nadiadwala, while other theories suggested Mafia association with Sajid and his complicity. Bharti's body was released to her family two days later after a post mortem, who arranged a cremation ceremony. A large number (more than 500) film personalities, including Amrish Puri, Govinda, Hema Malini, Babita, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shirodkar, Saif Ali Khan, Sangeeta Bijlani, Sridevi, Manisha Koirala, Asha Parekh, offered condolences to bereaved family members at their residence.
Two of Bharti's completed films Rang and Shatranj were released several months after her death and dedicated to her memory. Both the movies were box-office hits. At the time of her death, she had completed 80% of the filming of Laadla, and Sridevi was recast in her role. Footage of Divya's performance in Laadla was seen in a television program in 1994. She was replaced in several other films she had signed such as Mohra, Kanyadaan, Vijaypath and Andolan. Her incomplete Telugu film Tholi Muddhu was partly completed by Indian actress Rambha, who slightly resembled Bharti and hence completed a few scenes of the movie for her. Few movies which she has signed did not even released such as Parinaam with Akshay Kumar & Chaal pe Chaal with Jackie Shroff.
