This is one of the rare mainstream Hindi movies in which the hero plays the role of a loser. It is widely considered to be one of Shah Rukh Khan's best performances, and he has said that it is his favorite film. He received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for his role.
For this film, Khan took a signing amount of Rs 5,000 and did the entire film for Rs. 25,000.
The film was remade in Telugu as Swapnalokam (1997) with Jagapathi Babu.
Synopsis
Everyone loves Sunil (Shah Rukh Khan) except his own father Vinayak. Sunil and his friends start a band. Anna, his childhood friend, returns after many years. After she joins the group, everyone is excited, especially Sunil, who secretly loves Anna. The only other person who knows this secret is his sister. As Anna joins the group, they start hunting opportunities to make it big in the music world. Chris, another band member and Sunil's best friend, is Sunil's antithesis in nearly everything. Professional photographers Vinod Chopra(Naseeruddin Shah) and Sudhir Mishra (Ravi Baswani) open a photo studio in the prestigious Haji Ali area in Mumbai, and hope to make enough money to keep it running. After a disastrous start, they are given some work by the editor of "Khabardar", a publication that exposes the scandalous lives of the rich and the famous. They accept it and start working with the editor, Shobha Sen (Bhakti Barve), on a story exposing the dealings between an unscrupulous builder, Tarneja (Pankaj Kapoor), and corrupt Municipal Commissioner D'Mello (Satish Shah). During their investigation, they find out that another builder Ahuja (Om Puri) too is involved in this dealing.

The story is about Priya Bakshi (Preity Zinta), the daughter of Gulshan (Anupam Kher) and Rohini Bakshi (Farida Jalal). Priya's parents, brothers and best friend, Ajay (Chandrachur Singh) love and support her. Ajay is secretly in love with her, and wishes to marry her in the future. But as she enters her first year in college, she catches the eye of Rahul (Saif Ali Khan) who quickly becomes attracted to her. She succumbs to his charm but her brothers and parents are unsure about Rahul. His womanizing worries them and they tell her to stay away from him. However, Priya is unable to leave Rahul. She convinces her parents to meet him but when they talk about marriage he backs off and he leaves Priya. Priya is devastated but moves on with her life. She later learns that she is pregnant with Rahul's child. Her parents go back to Rahul to talk about marriage but to their shock he refuses to marry her. Priya is faced with a decision, and she chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. Alone and neglected Priya is devastated. Later; however her parents and brothers find it hard to live without her and they bring her back. But now she has to face the society and overcome the disdain of her neighbors, among others. Society virtually ostracizes her and her family. Upon going back to college she finds out that all of her friends now mock her, and girls prefer to stay away from her due to her bleak character. During all this time Ajay sticks by her like a true savior, and Priya starts falling for him. With his support and with the courage she was nurturing in her womb, she makes people realize that she isn't a fornicator, but a girl who loved someone immensely. She could have gotten rid of the child she holds in her body, but she didn't because her child was a being and not a piece of trash. She says that if only she had gotten married, maybe the scenarios would have been different, maybe her child would have been loved and valued, rather than abused and insulted. With these words, she eventually gains the support of those who had earlier disrespected her. Her friends finally accepted her the way they did before and she was having a back to normal life. At the same time she manages to change Rahul's views as well and he decides to marry her. in a fit of a moment, Ajay and Rahul both propose her. Priya, who had already started feeling for Ajay selects him over Rahul stating a spineless guy like Rahul can never be a reliable husband.

Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a junior artist in the 1970s Hindi film industry, in love with film star Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). One evening, Om views the premiere of Shanti's film Dream Girl, posing as Manoj Kumar. Later that night, Om becomes drunk and describes his vision of himself as a famous, wealthy film star winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actor to his friend Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) and some local children. At the shooting of a later film, Om rescues Shanti from a fire scene where of the fire has escaped control, and they become friends. One day, after following Shanti, he overhears her and producer Mukesh Mehra's (Arjun Rampal) conversation, that Mukesh and Shanti have married in secret and Shanti is pregnant and expects a traditional wedding. Mukesh pretends to be happy with the news, and invites Shanti at the set of their soon-to-be-made film Om Shanti Om. Mukesh promises to cancel the film, reveal their marriage to the public, and have a grand wedding on the set; but instead traps Shanti on the set and sets it on fire to prevent a financial loss and to protect his career. Shanti tearfully begs Mukesh to release her but he leaves anyway.

Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman, living in India with his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and two sons Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is the elder son and was adopted by Yash and Nandini at birth; this is known to everyone in the Raichand household, except Rohan. Rahul visits Rohan in the Boarding School and begs of Rohan never to ask where he went or why he left, and asks that he take care of Nandini.
