C'est le premier long métrage produit par les studios Rīgas Mākslas filmu studija du temps de la République socialiste soviétique de Lettonie, mais le tournage avait débuté en 1940, avant l'occupation de la Lettonie par l'URSS. La première projection a eu lieu en 1941.
Synopsis
L'histoire se déroule en 1802, dans le Gouvernement de Livonie alors sous Empire russe. À la suite de l'instauration de l'impôt par tête, on assiste au soulèvement des paysans, refusant effectuer la corvée. Vīteļu Pēteris prend la tête de la révolte sur le domaine de Kauguri. Un haut fonctionnaire de l'Empire russe, von Ungern-Sternberg est précipité sur place, accompagné de l'unité de grenadiers menés par le major Kapoustine, pour faire régner l'ordre. Set in the late 18th century, the story follows the life of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Well known for her beauty and fashion sense, she is also remembered for her extravagance and gambling habits. Despite the blatant infidelities of her husband, the cold and much older William Cavendish, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, Georgiana thrives, becoming a fashion icon, a doting mother, a shrewd political operator, and darling of the common people. Bess later explains to Georgiana that the reason she began the affair with the Duke was so that she could get her children back. The Duke wants a male heir, which the Duchess has not yet provided. The idea is that Bess can, since she already has three sons, of whom the Duke is very fond, treating them as if they were his own.

The film begins where the previous film, The Emigrants ended, with Karl Oskar bringing Kristina and their three small children, Johan, Marta and Harald, along with Karl Oskar's brother Robert, Robert's friend Arvid, through the woods to the land he claimed at Lake Ki Chi Saga. Upon their arrival, Karl Oskar leads them to a small shanty he found on the land, telling them it will provide them shelter until he can build them a farmhouse, and he points out to Kristina how fertile the topsoil is. With three small children and Kristina expecting another child, Karl Oskar pours all their resources into building them a house before winter arrives. He begins clearing the land of the tall pine trees, and with the help of Robert, Arvid and some of their Swedish neighbors, construct for them a small farmhouse.
