Kohinoor is a 1960 Bollywood film produced by Dr V. N. Sinha and directed by S U Sunny. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Leela Chitnis and Kumkum. The films music is by Naushad.
It is said that Dilip Kumar went into depression after playing tragic roles in films such as Devdas and his psychiatrist recommended to do light roles. One such role that he took up was Kohinoor. Kohinoor cast Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari to play a prince and princess of different kingdoms and was full of sword fights, songs and dances. This film is also notable for some rare comical and funny scenes by Meena Kumari, who is otherwise known as tragedy queen. Its tone was light and it lacked the intense characterisations of their earlier films. It was a major hit of the year.
Synopsis
After the passing of Maharaj Dhiraj Rana Chandrabhan of Kailash Nagar, the Senapati, Veer Singh, crowns Rajkumar Dhivendra Pratap Bahadur Chandrabhan as the next King. Veer's wife, who has brought up Dhivendra like her own son, Surinder, would like Dhivendra to get married to Rajkumari Chandramukhi of Rajgarh. The Maharaja of Rajgarh is pleased to hear of this, and asks his daughter to set forth to Kailash Nagar. On the way there, she is abducted by her very own Senapati and held captive until she gives her consent to marry him. Dhivendra rescues her, both fall in love, but are captured by Senapati's men. Dhivendra is gravelly injured but manages to escape and is looked after Rajgarh's Raj Nartaki, Rajlaxmi, who also falls in love with him. After Dhivendra recuperates, he finds out that Chandramukhi is being against her will at Senapati's castle, he sets forth to set her free, but is captured in the process. Held in chains, he is blinded by a vengeful Rajlaxmi, and Chandramukhi is given an ultimatum - either wed Senapati or witness the death of Dhivendra.Actors

Ezra (Sohrab Modi) is a jeweller who has a son called Elijah. He also has a friendly butler/child minder called Emmanuel. In the beginning, Ezra is due to leave. As he does, Elijah becomes upset and stands at the balcony. In the roads of the Jewish area, Brutus (Nazir Hussain), Governor of Rome, is passing, making an announcement. Watching over the balcony, is Elijah. A stone slips from his hand and hits Brutus on the head. Brutus immediately gets Elijah arrested, and as Elijah is a Jew, sentences him to death. Hearing this, Ezra rapidly returns from his trip and arrives at the doorstep of Brutus. He begs Brutus to free Elijah but Brutus feeds Elijah to hungry lions. Ezra sadly returns to his house. In revenge, Emmanuel kidnaps Lydia, motherless daughter of Brutus, and takes her to Ezra. Ezra declines to kill Lydia and adopts the child.

The film is about two brothers, Ganga and Jamuna, growing up in a village controlled by an evil landlord. When Ganga is framed by the landlord for a crime he did not commit, he escapes to the mountains with his girlfiend, Dhanno, and joins a band of bandits. His younger brother, Jamuna, is sent to the city for his education and becomes a police officer. Years later, when Ganga is about to become a father, he decides to return to the village to ask for forgiveness. However, Jamuna wants him to surrender to the police for his crimes and when Ganga refuses and tries to leave, Jamuna shoots him dead. Ganga's death rendered more poignant by the fact that it was his money that paid for Jamuna's education and allowed him to become a policeman.

The film is set in post-independence India, where industrialization is slowly creeping in. The focus is on tongawallahs who earn their living transporting people on tongas (horse carts). Their livelihood is threatened when the son of a rich landlord (Jeevan) begins operating a bus service in the town, which he subsidizes heavily with the sole intention of first driving the tongawallahs out of the town and then making profits.

Tired of being poor, Noshu, a newspaperman abandons his scruples and starts to make money as a black marketeer. A young doctor returning home from abroad is stranded in a village as his plane develops trouble and crashes. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful local village girl, who happens to be the daughter of his blind host. The romance is not looked upon with favour by the villagers, especially one particular villager who is courting her himself. He hatches a plot to drive the doctor out of the village and in the process defiles the girl's character. Chandra (Dilip Kumar, a young lawyer, lives in a well-to-do joint family with his parents, sister Radhika (Manorama) and sister's husband, Chaman (Gope). Chaman is made to do all the house-hold chores as he lives on the sustenance provided by his wife's family. When Chaman is insulted by his other-in-law, Radhika steps in and walks out of the house with her husband. They start a small business outside the city and soon start doing well. Here Chandra on a visit to his sister meets Roopa (Mumtaz Shanti), who lives a poor lifestyle with her older unemployed brother Moti (Jeevan) and a younger brother Gulab studying in school. To make a living Roopa runs a school. Chandra and Roopa fall in love and are married despite their financial differences. However, the in-laws soon start taunting Roopa about her previous poor state and slowly make her life miserable. Chandra is too weak to stand up to his mother, and to avoid the domestic scene at home takes to drinking and gambling. Matters are set right when Radhika comes for a visit, and after a stern lecture from her, everyone mends their ways and live peacefully.
