Ghar Ki Izzat (Honour Of The House) is a 1948 Hindi social family drama film directed by Ram Daryani for Murli Movietone. The film starred Dilip Kumar and Mumtaz Shanti in lead roles with Manorama, Jeevan and Gope. The cinematography was by Kumar Jayawant. Music was composed by Pundit Gobindram. The story writer was K. S. Daryani and the dialogue and lyrics were by I. C. Kapoor.

The milieu is upper middle-class joint family, with the mother treating her son's wife shabbily. The son, an educated man working as a lawyer, is unable to handle the situation at home and turns to drink.

Synopsis

Chandra (Dilip Kumar, a young lawyer, lives in a well-to-do joint family with his parents, sister Radhika (Manorama) and sister's husband, Chaman (Gope). Chaman is made to do all the house-hold chores as he lives on the sustenance provided by his wife's family. When Chaman is insulted by his other-in-law, Radhika steps in and walks out of the house with her husband. They start a small business outside the city and soon start doing well. Here Chandra on a visit to his sister meets Roopa (Mumtaz Shanti), who lives a poor lifestyle with her older unemployed brother Moti (Jeevan) and a younger brother Gulab studying in school. To make a living Roopa runs a school. Chandra and Roopa fall in love and are married despite their financial differences. However, the in-laws soon start taunting Roopa about her previous poor state and slowly make her life miserable. Chandra is too weak to stand up to his mother, and to avoid the domestic scene at home takes to drinking and gambling. Matters are set right when Radhika comes for a visit, and after a stern lecture from her, everyone mends their ways and live peacefully.

A young doctor returning home from abroad is stranded in a village as his plane develops trouble and crashes. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful local village girl, who happens to be the daughter of his blind host. The romance is not looked upon with favour by the villagers, especially one particular villager who is courting her himself. After the passing of Maharaj Dhiraj Rana Chandrabhan of Kailash Nagar, the Senapati, Veer Singh, crowns Rajkumar Dhivendra Pratap Bahadur Chandrabhan as the next King. Veer's wife, who has brought up Dhivendra like her own son, Surinder, would like Dhivendra to get married to Rajkumari Chandramukhi of Rajgarh. The Maharaja of Rajgarh is pleased to hear of this, and asks his daughter to set forth to Kailash Nagar. On the way there, she is abducted by her very own Senapati and held captive until she gives her consent to marry him. Dhivendra rescues her, both fall in love, but are captured by Senapati's men. Dhivendra is gravelly injured but manages to escape and is looked after Rajgarh's Raj Nartaki, Rajlaxmi, who also falls in love with him. After Dhivendra recuperates, he finds out that Chandramukhi is being against her will at Senapati's castle, he sets forth to set her free, but is captured in the process. Held in chains, he is blinded by a vengeful Rajlaxmi, and Chandramukhi is given an ultimatum - either wed Senapati or witness the death of Dhivendra.

The film is set in post-independence India, where industrialization is slowly creeping in. The focus is on tongawallahs who earn their living transporting people on tongas (horse carts). Ashok Tandon (Dharmendra) is a bank manager, and is in love with Deepa (Raakhee), and both are to be married soon. However, Ashok is arrested for theft from the bank. After his release he finds out that his mother has died; Deepa is married and has re-located; and he was framed by his colleagues at the bank. Devastated but still honest, he is befriended by Raja Ranbir Singh, who gives him a job, as well a new identity. Ashok now becomes Bikram Singh, and he must seek out Deepa, and his shrewd and calculating colleagues at the bank to extract vengeance.
