William S. Bowdern (Timothy Dalton) is a World War II veteran who was severely affected by a bad experience in France on All Saints’ Day in 1944. In the first scene of the movie, we flash-back through one of Bowdern's dreams to where he was trying to escape from a German advance as SS soldiers execute wounded American soldiers. A wounded soldier calls Bowdern, the chaplain, to give him the Last Rites; Bowdern at first denies him so he can escape. Bowdern rethinks the matter and does his duty but is bayonetted by an SS soldier. He becomes an alcoholic, tormented by his injuries and the guilt of refusing a dying man's last wish.

Zohar (Dana Ivgy) and Daffi (Nelly Tagar) are two soldiers trying to serve out their mandatory service with the IDF. On their way back to base after the weekend Daffi bumps into a new girl Tehila and, believing that she is her replacement, takes her under her wing. Daffi and Zohar work menial jobs with Daffi being forced to shred paper. After Daffi trains the new girl she goes to her supervisor Rama and explains that after writing letters to everyone she could trying to get a new position in Tel Aviv they have finally sent a replacement. However Tehila is not a replacement at all but has snuck onto the base to see a boy she slept with and fell in love with. After he rejects her she slits her wrists and crawls into bed where she is discovered by the other girls in the morning. Daffi is crushed by her death realizing that she will not be placed after all. However when she complains to personnel the officer in charge tells her she got to go the city by applying to be an officer. Daffi then gets a recommendation from a boy Zohar has a crush on and Rama and is transferred away. She and Zohar part on bad terms.

Stephen and his daughter Justine run from a wireless internet ghost of Michelle, Stephen's late wife. The father and daughter stay at Stephen's cabin, away from the city. A short while after they get there, Stephen's girlfriend Marta arrives. As Stephen and Marta are about to get intimate, a laptop sitting on the table turns on, revealing continuous emails to Stephen from Michelle. L'histoire se déroule dans les années 1950-1955 dans une mission lointaine de Guinée, alors sous administration francaise. Il admire son confrère le père Derval, de dix ans plus âgé, qui lui paraît le modèle du « broussard » à qui semble tout réussir. Mais bientôt le jeune homme se confronte aux tentations de l'Afrique profonde et mystérieuse ; sentiment de ne pas être à sa place et d'être inutile, alors qu'il doit s'habituer à de longs palabres avec les chefs de village, se confronter avec les peurs et superstitions des autochtones, les mariages forcés et le temps immobile. Entre découragements et découvertes, il va apprendre au fil des années à aimer les qualités et les défauts de ces populations et traverse des périodes de profondes joies partagées, jusqu'au jour où, atteint de fièvre bilieuse, il est rappelé pour se soigner en France métropolitaine. Il a trente-cinq ans et doit faire le bilan de sa vie de missionnaire qu'il juge ne pas avoir réussie. Mais ayant expérimenté la communion des saints, il comprend que la question n'est pas la réussite humaine et connaît une véritable conversion.
