Lessons in Dissent is a 2014 documentary film about young political activists in Hong Kong.

Synopsis

Lessons in Dissent was filmed over 2011 and 2012 and follows two student activists, Joshua Wong and Ma Jai, as they protest the proposed adoption of the Moral and National Education curriculum for Hong Kong's schools. They felt the curriculum amounted to brainwashing. Wong, a secondary school student at the time, is portrayed as a charismatic young leader. He founded a student group called Scholarism to fight the changes and became famous in his opposition. Ma Jai, a school drop-out, remained active in the League of Social Democrats as an organiser and protestor. Both were arrested for their efforts but the protests succeeded and that National Education curriculum was made optional.

There are five cameras — each with its own story. When his fourth son, Gibreel, is born in 2005, self-taught cameraman Emad Burnat, a Palestinian villager, gets his first camera. At the same time in his village of Bil’in, the Israelis begin bulldozing village olive groves to build a barrier to separate Bil'in from the Jewish Settlement Modi'in Illit. The barrier's route cuts off 60% of Bil'in farmland and the villagers resist this seizure of more of their land by the settlers.

To a large extent, the film consists of interviews with genocide survivors, many of whom were children in 1994. In all, over thirty survivors, perpetrators, and experts were interviewed for the film. In these interviews, the survivors discuss what it means to be a Rwandan and to live next door to people who killed their families. The survivors describe how they deal with their country's request that they forgive one another and move on, so that Rwanda can rebuild and unify itself. Perpetrators' views illuminate the madness that seized the culture in 1994; exploring the experience of apologizing to victims, and examining what it is like to be looked at as a murderer in Rwandan society.
