Add to a movie listMcTeague (aka Life's a Whirlpool) is a 1916 American silent film drama directed by Barry O'Neil, the first adaptation of Frank Norris's 1899 novel McTeague. The stars of the film were Holbrook Blinn and Fania Marinoff whose roles were played seven years later by Gibson Gowland and Zasu Pitts in the remake, Eric von Stroheim's opus Greed (1923). Blinn was already famous for playing brutal characters on the stage such as in Salvation Nell (1908).
The film is now considered a lost film.

As described in a film magazine, when the police authorities learn of the type of people Jennie Cushing (Ferguson) lives with, they send her to a reformatory. Shortly before the end of her term she becomes the hired girl of the Doane's. From there she goes to the city and becomes the maid to the wealthy Edith Gerrard (Delatore). When Donelson Meigs (Dexter), a famous artist, is painting Miss Gerrard's picture, he falls in love with the maid, who accompanies her mistress to each sitting. He persuades Jennie to pose for him and finally tells her of his love. Jennie realizes the difference in their social positions and, although she now lives with him, she will not become his wife. After Jennie discovers that Donelson has learned of her having been in a reformatory, she leaves him and goes to America, where she starts a home for young children of the slums. After a two year search Donelson finds her and professes his love.

Là-bas, il rencontre Sally, la fille d'un pauvre pasteur, alors qu'elle était en train de voler des roses pour la paroisse de son père, et il tombe amoureux d'elle. Quand Sally apprend que Giles et son père sont fâchés, elle fait le vœu de les réconcilier. Elle se rend chez le comte, le charme et devient pour lui une personne de confiance. Lorsqu'elle se blesse en essayant de cueillir des herbes pour soigner sa goutte, le comte lui rend visite. En route, il s'arrête à une auberge et donne une demi-couronne pour qu'on soigne son cheval. En fait c'est Giles qui reçoit cet argent, et l'ayant gagné honnêtement il est pardonné par son père et il se marie avec Sally en ayant la bénédiction du comte.
