À Farrebique, près de Goutrens, dans l'Aveyron (Midi-Pyrénées, Massif Central), la vie d'une famille de paysans, les Rouquier, est filmée au rythme des quatre saisons ponctuant leurs activités et leur relations. Faut-il agrandir la ferme pour le prochain printemps, installer l'électricité ? Le nom de la ferme semble dériver du verbe ferrar, variante farrar = ferrer, plutôt au présent de l'indicatif qu'à l'impératif, et du mot bica = bique, chèvre, bien que ce nom soit moins répandu en occitan que son homologue français. Les chèvres ne se ferrant pas, ce serait une formation facétieuse. Certains ont pensé que ce nom signifiait « la ferme des chèvres », sans argument linguistique suffisant.

Namir is Egyptian, a Copt and now lives in France. When there is a family reunion, he buys an old video cassette recorded many years earlier at a religious holiday in his home village, when his mother said she had had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Namir realizes he has in his hands a very interesting subject for a documentary: he convinces his producer that it is a good idea and sets off on a journey that takes him back to his origins and puts his profession as a director to the test. Filmmakers James Hanlon and the Naudet brothers were originally filming Tony Benetatos, a probationary firefighter of the New York City Fire Department assigned to the Engine 7/Ladder 1/Battalion 1 Firehouse on Duane Street in Lower Manhattan with the intention of making a film about the "probie's" first experience as a firefighter. On the morning of September 11, the firehouse, under the direction of Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer, was called out on a reported "odor of gas" at Church and Lispenard Streets. Jules rode with Pfeifer to investigate, while Gedeon stayed behind at the firehouse with the "probie.
