Synopsis
Gerardo, an aspiring actor, trying unsuccessfully to cross over from comedy to tragedy, is involved, due to his ability to mimic dialects of Italy, in a scam concocted by Lallo against a rich cloth-merchant. His inexperience means that he is the only one to be arrested and sentenced to several months in prison, where he encounters a vast array of petty criminals, devoted primarily to scams of various kinds. He befriends Chinotto, a con man for whom the doors of the prisons are like "revolving doors of a large hotel."Actors

In Italy in the Sixties, a gang of American thieves arrive in Naples to steal the famous Treasure of San Gennaro. However the Americans do not know how to move in the picturesque town. For the customs of the natives are too weird and incomprehensible to them. So the two men and the girl (the gang members) go to a prison, following the advice of a friend. There he would find the man who would have done in their case. It is a certain Don Vincenzo, a very famous in the city for his theft. He however, since it is known by everyone there, is treated in the prison as a gentleman by the guards with all possible facilities. The Americans, when they see this type of treatment, impossible in a country like them, remain quite stunned. Don Vincenzo warmly received them and advises them to go to Naples to look for a certain Armandino Girasole, said "Dudù". He, a young thief by profession, would help them steal the treasure of San Gennaro, fortunately not mentioned by the Americans to Don Vincenzo. The Americans, keeping secret the purpose of theft, meet Dudù and agree with him.

The film features several episodes in which actors Ugo Tognazzi and Vittorio Gassman are the greatest performers. The themes of the short stories are intended to offer a clear picture of the habits, vices, of cheating and taste typical of the majority of Italians in the Sixties. Obviously the characters and funny situations are written and staged in a way that touches the limits of satire and coarseness, however many of these issues are still recognized by the Italian company. The satire of the episodes affects people of both noble origins of poor people, both political and police officers who abuse their power and, last but not least the middle classes. To remember are the episodes as The Monster in which a man who has killed the whole family and has barricaded himself in the house was arrested by two policemen (Gassman and Tognazzi) and photographed with the present. However, although the man is a murderer, the two cops are real monsters of ugliness. Another episode to remember is Education in which the parent Ugo Tognazzi educates his son (Ricky Tognazzi) being a perfect cheat to appear more masculine and smart, to pay much less and not plunging into heavy or boring situation would certainly not born. He instructs his son in beating their classmates who do not want him to copy the tasks and lie age when he went to the fair to not pay the ticket. When the child grows, the first thing it will do is make amends for his teachings repaying his father with a pistol and with the theft of all his possessions.

Marco Ravicchio, responsable des relations publiques d'une modeste société de production cinématographique italienne, part pour Buenos Aires pour présenter un film lors d'un festival. A Roman small-time crook, Cosimo, is arrested for the attempted theft of a car. After he is convicted and put in prison, he starts haranguing his girlfriend and former accomplices by telling them that he has a plan for a heist but that he needs their help to be freed. In order to assure his release, they find an acquaintance named Peppe (Vittorio Gassman) with a clean criminal record to take the blame for the theft in the hope that the police will release Cosimo. They instead have both of them jailed. While Peppe is in jail, Cosimo tells him the plans for the heist of a safe in a pawnshop. Peppe then reveals that he got off merely with probation, leaving him free to pursue the heist without Cosimo, much to his chagrin.

The film is set in Rome in 1922.
