Madame X is a 1920 American silent drama film directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Pauline Frederick. The film is based on the 1908 play Madame X, by French playwright Alexandre Bisson, and was adapted for the screen by J.E. Nash and Frank Lloyd. A copy of this film survives in the George Eastman House Motion Picture Collection.

The play was previously adapted for the screen in 1910, and in 1916. The play has been subsequently remade several times.

Synopsis

A woman is thrown out of her home by her jealous husband and sinks into depravity. Twenty years later, she finds herself accused of murder for saving her son, who does not know who she is. He finds himself defending her without knowing her background.

As summarized in a film publication, David Marsh (Bowers), an inventor, is in love with Ann Hardy (Novak), but his brother Lewis also loves her. Lewis previously loved Rose Merritt (Frederick), but betrayed her and has cast her off. When he sees the success of David with Ann, Lewis reproaches his brother and threatens to end his own life unless he can marry Ann. David, overcome with these events, sinks into an armchair and falls asleep. In his dreams, the figure of Fate (George) appears and tells him that no matter which road he takes, he will find happiness with Ann and will marry her only.Then follow three dreams, one taking place in the North, one in the West, and one in his home town. When he awakes, he finds that Lewis was greeted with the same apparition and has decided to marry Rose, while David marries Ann.

Letty Shell, une fille de modeste condition, aspire à trouver un riche époux qui la ferait s'élever socialement. Quand elle rencontre Nevill Letchmore, elle concentre toutes ses cartes sur lui. Après un incident qui irrite Letchmere, mais révèle son mépris d'une classe sociale inférieure, elle finit par comprendre qu'elle ferait mieux d'épouser un homme qu'elle aime vraiment. C'est ainsi qu'elle se tournera vers Richard Perry, un jeune photographe désargenté, qui devra travailler dur pour s'en sortir, mais finalement aidé par la fortune d'un oncle riche.

Après des études en Europe, Ethel Warren revient faire des débuts à New York avec la compagnie d'opéra dont Jean Paurel, un baryton de renommée mondiale, est la vedette. Après que Paurel apprend qu'il ne pourra jamais plus chanter, Bianca, une chanteuse à la retraite et le premier amour de Paurel, lui apprend que Carlo est leur fils et supplie Paurel de laisser Ethel pour le bonheur du jeune homme. Finalement il accepte.

Seven young English aviators are billeted at the Berthelot farm near the French front. One of the flyers, Philip Blythe, falls in love with farmer Berthelot's daughter, Jeannie, and on the morning before a dangerous mission declares his love for her. Philip is shot down, and Jeannie helps an ambulance crew to extricate his apparently lifeless body from the wrecked plane. In the following weeks, Jeannie searches in vain in all of the military army hospitals for Philip. She does encounter Philip's father, who, disapproving of her lowly origins, falsely informs her that Philip has died. In farewell, Jeannie sends a bouquet of lilacs to his room, and Philip, recognizing the flowers as her gift, painfully drags himself to his window in time to call her back to him.
