Synopsis
Au XVIIIe siècle, vit Magdeleine de Maupin, une jeune fille de bonne famille que son oncle, M. de Maupin, veut marier contre son gré à un homme qu'elle n'aime pas. Mais l'impératrice Charlotte d'Autriche-Hongrie déclare la guerre à la France et elle se voit contrainte de fuir le château de son oncle situé près de la frontière déguisée en curé par ordre de son tuteur afin d'échapper aux violences qui pourraient être faite aux femmes par les soldats austro-hongrois. Alors que la maestro du château, son prétendant Oscar et son oncle sont capturés par leurs poursuivants, elle s'échappe avec sa cousine Gracieuse et gagne le couvent où son oncle lui enjoint d'aller mais elle y renonce finalement pour ne pas vivre une vie de femme esclave. Elle arrive en ville et est enrôlée de force dans l'armée qui recrute afin de combattre les Austro-Hongrois et prend le nom de Théodore. Bientôt cependant elle s'éprend du capitaine Alcibiade qui lui montre grande camaraderie. Son identité est cependant découverte par le perfide chevalier d'Albert qui s'entiche d'elle et qu'elle rencontre lors d'une escale au château de Rosette Durand, maîtresse de D'Albert et veuve d'un général auquel Alcibiade ramène les restes de son époux. Mais à la fin, Magdeleine déclarera son amour à Alcibiade.Actors

This movie is a socially conscious drama chronicling the exploits of three Roman thugs. The young men spend the day committing petty crimes, and culminate it in a rendezvous with three streetwalkers. After taking their pleasure, the men attempt to cheat the hookers out of their money, but the women outsmart them. That night, the guys return to the city for more exploits. Bubù renonce à son métier d'artisan boulanger par paresse et parce qu'il considère que l'on peut gagner plus d'argent autrement. Il décide donc de vendre les charmes de Berta, sa compagne, qui accepte ce commerce, par amour pour lui. Mais Berta contracte bientôt la syphilis et entre à l'hôpital. Bubù, désargenté et affamé, dérobe la caisse d'une boutiquière : il est très vite arrêté et emprisonné. Après une période d'incertitudes, Berta retrouve Piero, un étudiant qui fut autrefois son client et à qui elle a transmis la maladie. Piero demeure pourtant très attaché à elle et accepte de l'héberger durant quelque temps.

During the end of the 19th century, young Metello decides to start a new life after the sudden loss of his parents. He meets a young girl, Ersilia. They get married and have a son. Metello becomes involved in a political activity at work and is arrested. He then lies that he won't be involved in the activity anymore, and as a result, has to flee town. He arrives at his new destination, and meets Viola, a middle-aged school teacher. He then has an affair with her, and as a result, she gives birth to his daughter. Towards the end of the film, Metello realizes that he really belongs back home with Ersilia.
