Two common working-class people, Robert and Jenny, meet one day in a bar. After Robert defends Jenny against her date, a district attorney's chauffeur, who is trying to get her drunk, they begin a relationship. She soon discovers that she will be tried in court for an abortion she needed a few years previously. Her parents disown her and she loses her job as a saleswoman. Robert stays with her, admitting his own responsibility for killing someone when he was 17 years old. Distraught at the thought of going to prison, Jenny convinces Robert to commit suicide with her. Just as she is planning the suicide, her lawyer comes and announces that the case has been dropped—the case had been delayed too long while the district attorney was in the hospital after his chauffeur has caused an automobile accident.

Ole Offor (Poul Reichhardt) a young graduate from agricultural college, returns home to discover that rumors about his fiance (Lily Broberg) are true—she has been cheating on him. Ole rejects her thin denials and decides to move to Canada to start a new life. In the meantime, Ole's father, Hans (Johannes Meyer), meets with an old childhood friend, Munk (Ejner Federspiel), who is seriously ill. Munk owns a beautiful old stud farm called Enekaer, but he has left it nearly bankrupt. Hans promises Munk that he will help. Le film développe une intrigue originale mettant en scène trois adolescents qui se retrouvent projetés dans l'univers de Ni no kuni. Un jour, Kotona commence à être traquée par un mystérieux assassin qui semble venue d'un autre monde. Elle finit par être grièvement blessée avec une dague ensorcelée. En tentant de la protéger, Yû et Haru se retrouvent propulsés dans Ni no kuni, "le deuxième monde", au Royaume d'Estavani. Ils se rendent compte que, dans cet autre monde, Kotona est la princesse héritière. Or quand une personne meurt dans l'un des deux mondes, elle meurt aussi dans l'autre. Les trois adolescents vont alors tenter de survivre et de sauver le royaume.
