Malevil is a 1981 post-apocalyptic French film directed by Christian de Chalonge. It's the adaptation of the 1972 science fiction novel Malevil by Robert Merle.

Synopsis

Vivant avec leur famille dans un petit bourg campagnard du centre de la France nommé « Malevil », le maire, le pharmacien, des cultivateurs, commerçants, une vieille femme et un simple d'esprit se réunissent dans une grande cave viticole pour débattre d'un banal sujet administratif, un beau jour ensoleillé à la fin de l'été. Soudain, le petit poste de radio qu'écoute le benêt ne capte plus aucune fréquence. Quelques instants plus tard, une considérable explosion retentit ainsi qu'un violent et long éclair qu'ils aperçoivent sous la porte d'entrée. Le bruit, la chaleur intense, l'humidité qui suinte des murs les assomment tous.

Henri Rainier is an employee at Miremant bank. He makes loans to an adventurous client, the Chevalier d'Aven, knowing that he has the backing of his superiors. However, the relationship proves financially disastrous, and the bank is faced with having to cover up its massive deficit. The bank's managers want to disassociate themselves from the scandal. As it is Rainier's client who is accused of fraud, the managers hold Rainier responsible for it and fire him from his bank job. However, Rainier refuses to take it lying down, and knows that it was the bank's directors who approved the loan. Rainier's wife Cécile and union representative Arlette suggest he sue his former company. Determined not to be the scapegoat, and anxious to avoid possible criminal charges, Rainier sets out to prove his former superiors' responsibility for this and other shady transactions.

Ingénieur électronicien spécialisé dans l'équipement maritime, Julien Dantec apprend qu'un grand quotidien organise une course de navigateurs en solitaire, autour du monde et sans escale. Set in a post-nuclear war of the year 2024, the main character, Vic (Don Johnson), is an 18-year-old boy, born in and scavenging throughout the wasteland of the former southwestern United States. Vic is most concerned with food and sex; having lost both of his parents, he has no formal education and does not understand ethics or morality. He is accompanied by a well-read, misanthropic, telepathic dog named Blood, who helps him locate women, in return for food. Blood cannot forage for himself, due to the same genetic engineering that granted him telepathy. The two steal for a living, evading bands of marauders, berserk androids, and mutants. Blood and Vic have an occasionally antagonistic relationship (Blood frequently annoys Vic by calling him "Albert" for reasons never made clear), though they realize they need each other. Blood wishes to find a legendary promised land where above ground utopias are said to exist, though Vic believes that they must make the best of what they have.
